1) they are used in catecholamine degradation 2)MAO take epi and noerep to 34 dihydroxymandelic acid 3)MAO eventuall takes metameprhrine and normetanephrine to 3methoxy 4hydroxy phenolglycol 4) COMT with SAM methylates epi to metnephrine and norepi to normetanephrine eventualy to 3methosy 4hydroxy phenlglycol 5)MAO is in the mitochondria of the nerve terminal 6)COMT is in the synaptic cleft 7) tyr---dopa---dopamine---norepi---epi 8)the enzymes are hydroxylase, decarboxylase, hydroxylase ,PNMT 9) after this the catecholamines are degraded with MAO and COMT 10 )3 methoxy 4 hydroxymandelic acid is one of the last or the 2nd to last step in catecholamine synthesis (called VMA is found in pheochromocytoma Hope this helps

thanks buddy... i think i got it.... ok.....what you are saying is that both comt and mao act on catecholamines....epi...norepi....dopamine.these two enzymes produse different intermediate metabolites though...when they act on the substrates.... the end result of epi and norepi metabolism is 3methoxy4hyrroxy mendalic acid and the end resuld of dopamine metabolism in homovanilic acid. the site where these enzymes are diff though...mao in mitochondria and mao in synaptic cleft. also mao has 2 isozymes....mao a in cns and other areas... mao b in non neural tissues. am i on track?

The main point is that they DEGRADE epi and norepi to 3methoxy4hydroxymandelic acid(VMA) I just thru in the cateholamine pathway to keep it in the memory bank

MAO acts inside the nerve terminal (as you said it is from mitochondria in nerve terminal) ? From where does COMT comes ? It is there in synaptic nerve terminals right ?
