BUT STILL ANSWER IS A FOR SURE SYMPTOMS OF PEPTIC ULCER IMPROVES IN PREGNANCY DUE TO DELAYED GASTRIC EMPTYING BUT REFLUX ESOPHAGITIS DO OCCUR DUE TO INCOMPETANCE OF LES THATS WAT BOOKS SAY

  #27

Guys.. guys.. A & C answers are related here!!!

Having GERD indicates incompetence of the LES. Increased acidity or production of gastric acid can contribute to the problem as can obesity, tight fitting clothes & PREGNANCY.
Going back to the question, pregnant person is healthy so no underlying GERD problem, so her heartburn is basically from physiological increased gastric acid production brought by her pregnancy.

Yeah I also read that peptic ulcer is improved during pregnancy.

A healthy 25 year old woman who is at 24 week's gestattion develops heartburn within an hour after eating Which of the following is the most likely cause?
a.-decreased competency of the lower esophageal sphincter
b.-decreased esophageal motility
c.-increased gastric acid production
d.-increased garstic emptying
e.-increased gastric motility

I would pick a)

Heart Burn in Pregnancy: Reasons:

- Reduced smooth muscle motility-related relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and cardiac sphincter* because increased Progesterone

- Decreased Gastric pH

- Expanding uterus displaces the stomach up ward decreasing stomach size and increasing pressures inside the organ

- Experienced by 85% of pregnant women

Constipation: Reasons:

•Decreased bowel transit time* (Hormones, first trimester)

•Displacement and compression of intestine by growing uterus (third trimester)

•Iron supplementation

Hemorrhoids

•Relaxation of smooth muscle contributes to vessel wall weakening* •Increases in venous pressure •Usually mildly irritating that can be compounded by untreated constipation •Often regress after delivery •They can worsen after delivery especially if prolong second stage and/or excessive pushing

Flatulence •Relaxation of smooth muscles leading to decreased motility resulting in gas pockets* •Causing bloating •Gas pain •Flatulence sad

My answer is choice "a"....Decrease competency of LES.....

Pregnancy can increase the frequency of heartburn because progesterone causes the valve to relax.

Heartburn and indigestion are more common during the third trimester because the growing uterus puts pressure on the intestines and the stomach. The pressure on the stomach may also push contents back up into the esophagus.

ans A

progesterone - muscle/sphincter relaxant

  #35

well a is the correct answer b/c pregnancy is a high progesterone state whish causes les to relax..........which in turn leadz to heatburn........
