thalamic and central pain wud point towards the same option. hence r ruled out.

referred pain is that felt elsewhere eg left shoulder when source is differnet but shares the nerve supply

can anyone tell whats gate theory

  #9

i will try and exxplain. i lack a little detail but i will read it up. the gate theory of melzack and wall is about small and large diameter nerve fibres. the small fibres carry pain and can be inhibited by stimulating the large fibres ( mechanoreceptor). ie like the gate is closed to transmission by the small fibres. this is mechanism of action of pain relief by rubbing, massage.

TENS and acupuncture are thought to act by stimulating release of endogenous opiods which also close the gate for pain from the small fibres.

i think the large fibres are C and the small pain fibres are A delta. please correct me if i am wrong.

correction

the small fibres are Adelta ( which are fast myelinated) and C fibres which are non myelinated and slow. A delta carries intense pain while C fibres carry chronic throbbing pain. Abeta is the large diameter inhibitory fibre.
