Here is my story....

I am an IMG from Russia of Indian descent. I took Step 1 in May and passed it with a 79/193. I know, not a good score. But here is something good, I was an honor student in Medical School and I have 6 months of Observership experience in Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, and Infectious Diseases, and 2 solid LORs form US doctors. I am planning on giving Step 2 CK at the end of November and CS at the end of December.

Questions:

Is there anyone out there who thinks I have a decent chance at matching in 2007? In other words, will I be able to get interviews with just my step 1 score? (I am only interested in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics)

Don't be too shy to respond.

mango / manish

do u need a visa?

ur observership experience will help u greatly.. honors in an img medical school doesnt carry much weight.. i know for i am 1 myself.. ur timeframe isnt good enuf and coupled with ur low s1 score i dont see u gettin many calls espec if u need an h1.

im not discouragin u from applyin. i applied last yr on 1 score also. it was a 99. im unmatched. if u can afford the gamble then do try by all means - it wil be the most enriching experience u will ever have.

but if u have enuf resources for just 1 shot at the title - then come out all guns blazin with a stellar s2 & 3 score and research ex in 2008..

my 2c. dont mind my words if u feel they are inconsiderate.. that wasnt my intention

How much is citizenship or visa is an issue in decideing which person to choose for residency. In other words do people with green cards or us citizenship get an edge or visa applicants? if yes then how much advantage they have, like 5% or 20% or depends.

How much of an edge is a hard question to answer with numbers (they make my brain bleed), but it is an edge. After all, US doctors can't go overseas without appropriate work visas, etc. But is it an advantage? I'd be lying to you if i said it didn't matter.
