Hello, I'm new in the forum. I completed my steps: step1 95, step 2 87, CS done and step 3 in september. I have no USCE, no LOR and I need a visa (I'm an IMG). I graduated 6 years ago and then, I created an ONG and organized many humanitarian missions with european doctors. I need some honnest advices: I will apply to 70 programs: 50 in IM and 20 in surgery. 1. If you were me, would you apply to surgery, which is highly competitive? 2. would you apply to universitary programs or, in general, competitive programs? thank you in advance for you help.

I just don't know how to thank you for ur precious help

well u need to call and ask progs individually if they wud consider ur appli. some progs are strict about yr of grad.. some arent.. cant generalise.. prelim surg is 1yr after which u need to find a categ 5yr spot.. im sure there have been many posts on the topic.. do go thru them usin the search function.. and let us know if there is anythin still botherin u

zip, First of all congratulations for your achivements. Don't take it personally. I really can't understand why people can't decide what they want to do? Surgery and IM are 2 different animals. There are lots and lots of hospital which take IMGs. I will save my resources and choose what I really want to do? If you realy want to do surgery, you can do 1 year of transitional or prelimary year. These are easier to get. Next year you can apply to see if there are 2nd year slot available or apply for residency again. Down side is you will loose a year but you will be getting paid and have more experience and in much better position if you happen to apply again. Believe there are always slot open in between
