Many IM programs have graduation year cut off. 2, 3, 5, or 10, although most of them don't posted on their website.
Unfortunately I am one of old IMGs (more than 10 years) and feel bad about this. What is my chance? What kind of programs don't mind graduation year?
Any inputs are appreciated.

certi it does not matter

I am sure you can read post from people that have made it

I have a friend that is in his 50's and made it

it depends what u did in those 10yrs.. if u did a residency and a phd - then who can deny u?

it certainly does matter what your graduation year is,but as apurva said it also matters what u did during all these years!!!

But certainly from what i see from my personal experience programmes and specially university programmes tend to prefer young graduates!!! unless you have stellar scores and excellent cv.

What i mean to say is for some programmes if u r 10 yrs old grad with similar scores and creds as a recent grad they will pick recent grad up for ivw.

But please remember that this doesnot hold good for all programme (mainly community programmes, and few univ progs')

I agree it is tougher for old IMGs..but not impossible.

Wut u did in those years certainly matters - and as a PD told me, Step 3 scores for old IMGs help a lot - coz they prove ur ability to function well as a resident

Thank you guys. I feel much better.
I had 7 years IM experience in home country and 5 years research in US with publications, No PhD though. There is no big gap in CV. And usmle scores are both above 90s. I know it sounds good. However, I heard that some program coordinators would throw away old IMG's applications even before program directors reach the whole package. No offense here, I understand it just the rule for some programs given large number of applicants in busy season. I guess a decent step 3 score does helps a lot for old ones. I am working on it.nod

with scores above 90 and research papers u shud do well.

some programmes might throw away your application but at their own loss.
dont worry about them there r loads of others who will accpet your application.

Katzung, Thank you for the kind words. How is your residency going? IT is nice to see people like you still hang out with us even after you have get to next station.

It is a tendency to worry too much about many things before match, but once you get there and look back people might laugh at their worries.

I guess some programs set the cut off might because they had bad experience with old ones. Not just because of out-date knowledge, but physical challenge as well. q4on-call would not be a big deal for 20s, but certainly a big one for 40s.

When you were on interviews, did any one concern about this?

Thanks

yes they did they raise the same question at the place where i matched,i told them that when u love doing something it doesnot matter you just do it''and they took me!!!(they were refferring to 48 hours work hours limit in UK when compared to 80 hours in USA).

So dont worry go ahead.
Good Luck.
