I graduated years ago and was totally out of medicine (a stay at home mom) in these years. Now that I want to start the preparation of USMLE, I fear that I may not find residency because of this long gap since graduation (will be 8 years by the time I will be ready for match) . I have no research or job experience (as already said I was just a house-wife and mom in these years). Please advice, whether or not should I continue with my prep.

Hi usmle-_mom, I am not too sure about this but if youhave decided to to take this exam go ahead and take it.There are so many out there and am sure you can still get residensy. If you start ,study deligently ,get good scores and pray ,GOD will open the doors.Read thruogh the forum I pasted.Just start ,pls dont look back.I am trying to do the same and am sure there were many who did it. So,get up girl and get 99 http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/31432

hi, I am an old graduate myself and also stay home mom with 2 kids) for all these years. I had some research experience though for 3 years, but after that it has been blank until last year when I started studying for step 1. Thank God I passed step 1 with 237/96 and hopefully will be able to finish step 2 ck and cs by may 2007. And after that...who knows i can start applying residency in September same year. By that time I will be 9 years old graduate. As coolsuch said that once we start..we must always look forward and never look back...otherwise it is always dragging us to the nonproductive site. So...stay positive and optimistic. I know that my chances are very limited but...I will work hard for that. Work hard and you will harvest the result later on.

HI, Nice to hear that there are people who want to come back to the field. I am in a similar situtaion...Finished my DO in India in 2001 and after that have been out of the loop for most part (except that I did MPH..which does not really count I guess), had a baby etc.. But I am planning to take my steps now ,..give it my best shot and go from there. Anybody want to share thoughts and study together (since we are in a similar sitution..email me at priceydoc@yahoo.com) Best of luck , P

I AM THE OLDEST IN THIS FORUM,AND NOT SUCH GOOD SCORES , I AM VERY HOPEFUL, I HAVE SEEN OLDER THAN ME WITH LOWER SCORES, GOT THE RESIDENCY IN THE SAME SPECIALTY AND SAME PLACE THEY APPLIED. I CAN NOT GET ANY YOUNGER OR RETAKE EXAM FOR BETTER SCORES , BUT I CAN ALWAYS WORK ON MY QUALIFICATIONS,THIS IS AMERICA NO DOOR IS CLOSED, IF YOU KNOCK ENOUGH. GOOD LOUCK
