what will be the complication if whole blood that was preserved 9 months back is transfused accidentally to an anemic patient( the ABO match being compatible luckily)...
I understand that with time the oxygen carrying capacity of RBCs is decreased and also the viability of platelets goes down...
So there should be no complication other than the wastage of this blood transfusion as the patient will still be anemic...
any chances of infection or a delayed transfusion reaction due to the old blood, or hemolysis etc
any views highly appreciated.
thanks.smiling face

Hyperkalemia, infection and even severe allergic reaction due to release of many antigenic determinents (remnants) can occur due to transfusion of old blood.

Increased rate of infection associated with transfusion of old blood after severe injury.
