Excluding the effect of drugs, apnea occuring after hyperventilation of an anesthetized patient results from 1) decreased demand for oxygen 2)increased cerebral blood flow 3)decreased carbon dioxide tension 4)increased hydrogen ion conc 5)decreased oxygenation of carotid bodies

Is it # 3 :?: Brain center is regulated by carbon dioxide tension not by oxygen.

I too had selected 3 But the answer says 4 ! Unfortunately the test questions did not come with explanations, and I was wondering how 4 could be the answer and hence I put this question on the forum. Can anyone explain how 4 could be the right answer ( if it really is!)

Increased Paco2 leads to increased H. If hyperventilating, then respiratory alkalosis occurs , which is decreased H ions due to decreased Co2 tension. I still think it should be number 3. Both CO2 tension and H ions have the same effect on the brain center. :?

Sorry, but read the q again. Number 4 is Increased H meaning decreased PH, therefore, one ans should be correct. I think its 3 again??????

Hi, I checked in the medical dictionary,STEDMANS, it defines apnoea, and cause is Hypocapnia, so now its number 3 officially. Probably a misprint in the answer choice . Hope the confusion is cleared.
