Hi workup 1,
Just joined the forum and i plan to take the exams in November too, so what's the plan? i've never been into study groups so please lead.

  #3

Hi Purple,
Welcome to the forum. Its nice to have someone scheduled for November exam.

Actually, i plan on doing course subject wise starting with:

1. Physio.

2.Anatomy

3.Biochem + Genetices

4.Microbio.

5.Immuno.

6.Beh.Sc

7.Pharma

8.Patho.

Dont worry about the order of subjects as we can work accordingly as to whichever ones we would like to do first. I am starting with Physio because it provides the base for other subjects like Patho.
After finishing a chapter , we can discuss it online & do the questions we have to see how much we have learned.

I plan to complete the course in 2.5 months so that we have time going through it once again before the Big day.

Any comments or suggestions are always welcome.

WE AIM FOR 99 & WE ARE GETTING IT!!...........LETS DO IT!!

GL

Hi Lilla,

Welcome aboard. Its good to have you too.

Guys lets not waste time. Starting with physio. the schedule is as follows:
(This schedule is according to KAPLAN PHYSIOLOGY) + plz go through through BRS for the corresponding topics because a lot of people recommend it too.

July 5: GENERAL TOPICS

July 6: EXCITABLE TISSUE

July 7: PERIPHERAL CIRCULATION

July 8: SKELETAL MUSCLE

July 9: CARDIAC MUSCLE

July 10: RESPIRATION

July 11: RENAL

July 12: ACID BASE

July 13 - 14 : ENDOCRINOLOGY

July 15: GI

Guys whatever section we do, we are doing its questions along too, the very same day ok. So please do keep at least 2 hours for doing questions......this way we wont pile up things & life will be smoother comparatively.

If You are lagging behind the schedule guys.......you are not giving enough time.
You really have to stick with the books & give them the time they deserve to score high.

Exam is just a few months away & we really need to pull up our socks ok.

Let's work it out ok together............AIM 99 !!

Regarding discussion .......we will set some time accordingly............let me know what you think.

GL everyone!!

Hi Girl^interrupted,
Welcome to join in. You are right, first reading does take a lot of time. But second generally takes lesser time comparatively,so dont worry & just try to stick to the schedule ok. You have done Biochem & Anatomy already for the second read....wow, you are in a pretty good shape. So just follow the rest with us & we will sail smoothly.
GL with your GRE & TOEFL !!

Purple, wow you have done Biochem too. That's pretty cool. How are you keeping up with Physio? i hope you are getting along with the schedule. Please do let me know & lets do the questions along otherwise things will pile up .I am managing them somehow too.

Lilla, your plan looks good. Are you doing Physio with us right now? Your questions are all set at a perfect pace. We all learned from it too.

GL guys , lets all do it together!!

hi workup1,good job.are you guys done with one reading of all subjects or are you just starting?if so i am also a begginer.started with patho.exam novend/dec begining.
1st reading how long do you aim to finish?whats the total study plan no of revisions how many months each?how many hrs a day.are you studying full time?

  #10

I have questions for you guys, when you read kaplan physiology page 86: factors affecting systolic pressure and factors affecting diastolic pressure. it is really diffcult for me to understand: a decrease in vessel compliance in two conditon. also, I can not use those concept to explain why cushing's syndrome, primary hyperparathyroidism have diastolic hypertension. by the way , you guys will go through all the BRS or just several chapters. which chapters in BRS is better? welcome questions about physiology.

  #11

Hi Folks,
Could I join your group please/
How does it work?
Phone discussion e mail or chat?
I am am aiming for that time too to take my exam

  #12

Hey workup,
Lets post how much you do each day.
I'm done with general topics and excitable tissue. But I guess will take a bit of more time for peripheral circulation.
As for questions, will do q-bank along not q-book which I've saved for the 3rd read.

Hi img05, i have done one reading except behavioral sc, very light reading---i would say just familiarization--so it's like i am just starting. i am an old img and needs to familiarize myself w/ lessons very ancient to me.
I am glad i joined this group, it helps me keep going....
Hi workup1, i kept your sked w/ me to make sure i follow it, altho i'm still bit behind right now--will try hard to catch up.
Sharon, welcome!
Lilla, i'm not there yet but will try to read about it today.....

Hi Guys,
Welcome to all the new members.

Img05, Thanks for the compliment. Actually, we all have our exam right around the corner so we are all working together to help eachother & work systematically to avoid freaking out at the last moments. We plan on completing our course in 2.5 months so we have sufficient time for another revision. Since our exam is close,we need to work hard. The number of hours you put in depends upon each individual.I mean i know i am not good at pharma, so if a member knows it like the back of his hand he might put in just 4 hours for the day's sched. but i know i need to put in more. Generally, i think we must all work 8 hours/ day. I did not complete my patho & pharma in the first read.

Sharon, we work by sticking to the schd we decide upon & do the day's task with questions. We also put up our queries & the questions are always welcome by all.
As we move on ,we will be setting a time to brisk through chapters we have done & discuss them online in 1-2 hours weekends or weekdays depending upon what the group decides.

Lilla, this is the first time i am checking BRS out. My first reading was from Kaplan physio. So i think as we move on we will be able to figure out which chapters are better.
If you know some, please do let us know beforehand.Your questons are really good and
you are right, a decrease in vessel compliance in two conditon does needs some figuring out. Let me try answering it:
A decrease in vessel compliance:
1.arterial systolic pressure increases in stiff vessel because there is less stretch & therefore the peak pressure increases.
2. ARTERIAL diastolic pressure will decrease because veins are still 6-10 times more distensible than arteries & 25 times more compliant.Plus the vol of arterial system is very small compared to venous system which can tolerate a large increase in vol with little or no increase in pressure So blood will pool from the less compliant arteries into veins causing a decrease in diastolic pressure.

Cushing synd has hypertension because the Mineralocorticoid effects of increase glucocorticoid levels causes salt & water retension. But if you are asking specifically for DIASTOLIC HYPERTENSION, i still need to read my endo thoroughly for it. So will try to answer when we do it on July 13-14(The Endo Days).

Primary Hyperparathyroidism causes increased calcium excretion & & it deposits in the tubules as well leading to renalcalculi, this leads to renal failure & is the cause of hypertension .Still need to read it to answer your DIASTOLIC HYPERTENSION.......maybe ......but no.......i still need to read it carefully when it comes up.

Girl^interrupted, i think its a great idea posting everyday as how you did. Will help keep a check .I agree on the Q book too, will save it for the third read when the whole subject needs testing. But lets see what others say.........may be we can do 1 of its tests after we finish physio on 15.Guy's what do you say?

Purple, yeah we have done it at school , we gave tests & have moved on & it just needs a little concentration and effort this time. We know we can do this!!.......we have done this before!!

GL guys & Happy Learning!!

I am trying to study 8hours/per day.but on weekend, in such beautiful summer, I alway want to go outside. how about you guys?

hi, usmle_u, I just use goljan audio and notes. I do not use BRS.my opinion, forget kaplan patho, I could not make any sense.

  #22

thanks lilla,
i have found brs physio very good.its quite organized as comared to kaplan. i did GIT,respirology and renal from BRS.infact GIT is really good.this is the reason i like BRS.i have decided to keep both BRS & gojan rapid review pathlogy( which exactly matches the lectures)then will see what to do.
