I am an IMG in Canada and want to pass some exam in order to work in the line of clinical doctor. I heard it is frustrated to pass Canada Medical License Exams as the government only offers a few vavancies each year. Some Canada trained graduates have to be resident in the states. Except these exams, is there other ways to go back to medical doctor? Our past clinical experienece is still useful? Does everyone have to start from resident training? If no choice, should I try USMLE or MCCEE? Which one is better for IMG. I appreicate any one who can help me or post his ideas to this forum.

Wayout 1: USMLE -- > resident in USA --> Specialist in Canada
Wayout 2: MCE --> matching program in Canada
Question is the probabilities in success, which one is better.

Hi Jefferyq

I am going to be in the same boat very soon. I have done a lot of internet research and got some info from my own resources. It is true that Canada is not as easy as USA. It is not impossible either. If you have determination and you are ready to endure the hardships then you can carry on with your ambitions. My research established the fact that you have more opportunities in US than Canada. But you should always try for the land where you want to stay permanently. Also, things are moving slowly in positive direction so may be something good is there at the end of the tunnel. I would suggest you to go for both USMLE and MCCEE. Now they are accepting USMLE too so I think with these exams at least you have possibility of matching both in US and Canada.

Hope this helps.

Also remember if you attain the status of permanent resident/citizen in Canada you will have to pass MCCEE anyways to qualify for J1 visa status in the states. I've recently taken MCCEE and MCCQE1 and reccomend you seriously consider where you want to live 10 years down the road. If Canada is truly your nation of choice, be prepared for some struggle. Seats are increasing, but not at the pace that new IMG's are, but keep your eyes open, and work on polishing your CV with as many Canadian LOR's as you can get. There is no back door without the MCC exams.

I'll be very honest, the chances are not as great as the US, but definitly increasing. The opportunities are far greater for fresh graduates, and especially those who seek Canadian letters of reccomendation. It also helps to go thru provincial IMG programs for example Alberta IMG prog, or Newfoundland as they usually have reserved seats for candidates. CARMS has opened up first iteration, which also helps to grab some iviews. The chances are also greater in the fields of Family Medicine, Community Medicine, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine as compared to any other specialty, but I've also heard of people getting into Neuro and Psych. Don't be discouraged, a lot of "older" grads are getting positions here as well. The main thing to do at your stage is pass your exams (including MCQE2 if possible) and get involved in Canadian Clinics..find out about provincial programs. I, and my good friend cordmd will try our best to help u..but we're a bit tied up wit residency as well. Good Luck.. where there's a will, theres a WAY! smiling face

Can you work in Canada (as a specialist) if you finish residency in US and get US board certified in that specialty? I just matched for neuro in the USA but I would consider living in Canada after residency. Especially in Montreal... smiling face

Thanks Nima for the quick reply! I guess tourism (or retirement in 40 years) is the way for me to be in Canada... wink ...unless the rules change in the next few years. Thanks again and good luck with your future endavors!

I think you need to confirm that mufurc..because I know a family physician and a psychiatrist personally who just had to take the Canadian board exams for that speciality and are not effectively practicing in Canada.

Contact different doctors in the various departments in the university nearest you (McGill?) let them know your interested in job shadowing their clinics. If you can't find anyone then be willing to volunteer on research projects of various physician, they are always looking for free labour, once, in ask them about observing their clinics. And, as a last resort, contact family physicians in your neighborhood and let them know your interested in Job Shadowing....don't give up...! I must have given out at least 40 resume's before I found my research mentour and clinical externship.

Most Canadian universities don't offer electives to "graduates" thus my earlier post for those of you who were still students..as a graduate, ur best bet is to "obeserve" or "job shadow" and for that ul have to contact doctors directly in the university..

good luck!

I know you can do it at Western Ontario School of medicine, check out this link:http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/Medicine/UME/VSE/International_letter.htm

and I know some Austrailian students who've done it at University of Calgary, you'll have to call their undergrad office for student affairs for that.

You can also do an elective at University of Manitoba:

MCCEE MCCQE1 are all applied sciences exams. Just do Toronto notes and practise mcqs for it. QE 2 is like OSCEs or step 2cs.
