Machiavelli, if you are not very comfortable using the ophthalmoscope, my suggestion is that you learn how to operate one comfortably. You need to know how to turn it on, how to adjust the focus power to suit your own refractive error if you have one (and know how to adjust it anyways, since it may be adjusted to someone else's power), how to switch from the the different slit and filter options in the ophthalmoscope and how to use it to examine the eye. However, I think it is not very important to learn to identify pathology as most SPs have normal findings and you wont be penalized if you miss something subtle. All the best!
