hi guys, this is your good ol' Z with a new name and a new avatar (due to some mess-up with the old account). only mytime seemed to notice the difference with my old name. did u notice how my brain is getting enlightened with the little that i've been reading.......

anyway, here are my answers:

1. my first thoughts are with B. I haven't really read about cyclo causing CHF (i know doxo does), but cyclo causes hemorr. cystitis and doxo is a vesicant.

2. A (wild guess!!!)

3. no idea yetraised eyebrow

4. A

5. i thought that was easy and jumed to A, but then it doesn't say anywhere in the Qs that both parents are heterozygous, so i guess i have to go with E.

Both parents are heterozygous, posssible , I thot so too esp. with the child having it! It has to be true but they say no family history at least someone sud have it, an aunt or and auntie or someone dead..so i choose the last one...otherwise i was gonna go with that calculation!

Thanks KG!wink

5.Tay-Sachs disease, an autosomal recessive disease caused by a
deficiency of hexosaminidase A, is lethal in childhood. In a
population of Ashkenazi Jews, blood testing shows the frequency
of heterozygotes to be 0.1. What is the probability that the
first child of two individuals from this population with no
family history of the disease will have Tay-Sachs?
A. 0.25
B. 0.11
C. 0.0625
D. 0.0025
E. Cannot be calculated from the information given

Ok.. here's my thought process fr this one....
1- Nowhere does it say that population is in H-W eqbm.. So forget abt trying A^2+2ab+b^2 = 1
2- That reduces it to a simple mathematical probability Q..

The net chances of any child having the disease are...
probability if child's parents r homozygous normal= P1
+
probability if child's parents r heterozygous= P2
+
probability if child's parents r homozygous diseased= P3

If both parents r old enuff to be parents.. they don't have tay sachs wink So not homozygous diseased So P3 = 0

If both parents r homozygous normal, probability fr child to be disease is nil So P1 = 0

So, net probability = if parents r hetrozygous. = P2 only in other words, P1+P2+P3 = P2 here

in this case... probability of child having disease=
Probability of 1 parent having heterozygous disease gene * probability of other parent having heterozygous disease gene * probability of the AR disease vertical transmission in heterozygous cases

= 0.1*0.1*.25
=0.0025
= choice D

PHEW!!! Hope i left no loop holesrolling eyes

Two separate tissue culture preparations are taken.. In the first one, a live tissue specimen taken from a human liver is incubated. In the 2nd one , a live specimen taken from human quadriceps femoris is incubated...
A continuous infusion is started to keep the surroundings of the culture preparations exactly the same as in normal in vivo homeostasis..
The rates of glycogen synthesis in both preparations are monitored.. A graph is plotted (after callibrating the zero of both curves near each other) which shows the rate of glycogen synthesis along y axis n time along x axis..
If the following substances are added separately, one by one in bolus to both the solutions at time X (shown as thick green line).. which of the following curves will represent the changes in the plots for the liver (shown in red color) and quadriceps tissue (shown in blue color)? Please neglect any accumulation of waste products and assume that each substance is added after eliminating the effects of the previous one.

Substances added are:-

1) 200 grams Glucose
2) 40 IU insulin
3) 40 IU glucagon
4) 40 IU epinephrine
5) solution wth 2 mmol/l of ionised calcium.
