Two separate tissue culture preparations are taken.. In the first one, a live tissue specimen taken from a human liver is incubated. In the 2nd one , a live specimen taken from human quadriceps femoris is incubated...
A continuous infusion is started to keep the surroundings of the culture preparations exactly the same as in normal in vivo homeostasis..
The rates of glycogen synthesis in both preparations are monitored.. A graph is plotted (after callibrating the zero of both curves near each other) which shows the rate of glycogen synthesis along y axis n time along x axis..
If the following substances are added separately, one by one in bolus to both the solutions at time X (shown as thick green line).. which of the following curves will represent the changes in the plots for the liver (shown in red color) and quadriceps tissue (shown in blue color)? Please neglect any accumulation of waste products and assume that each substance is added after eliminating the effects of the previous one.

Substances added are:-

1) 200 grams Glucose
2) 40 IU insulin
3) 40 IU glucagon
4) 40 IU epinephrine
5) solution wth 2 mmol/l of ionised calcium.

1. E

2. H

3. D

4. B

5. A

will be waiting for your answers Indidoc.

  #1046

ok... answer time!!! answer time!!

Part 1- glycogen synthesis-

1-D Glucose activates LIVER glycogen synthase ONLY
2-B Most got this one right
3-E Gucagon effects r seen IN LIVER ONLY
4-H Most got this one right too
5-A Calcium has NO EFFECT ON GLYCOGEN SYNTHASE.. It activates glycogen phosphorylase in muscle but that not to be considered here becoz in vitro, the 2 processes of glycogen synthesis n breakdown proceed TOTALLY INDEPENDENT of each other.. Change in 1 WILL NOT AFFECT THE OTHER in vitro... it does in vivo becoz global control parameters change (this ws the reason i framed this Q as culture situation)

PART 2- Glycogen breakdown

1-A Glucose has NO EFFECT on glycogen breakdown
2-H Most got this one right
3-D again.. Glucagon---liver
4-B. Right fr most
5-C Inc Ca is indicator fr contraction n activates MUSCLE glycogen phosphorylase.

Kudos to Z99 fr getting the max correctnodnod 9/10 The new avatar's working fr u.. n u r in top form..
Penalty points fr focus fr 2 changes in answers.. esp after discussing wth mewinkmad
