ME: Old IMG (graduated in 1995)who first took step 1 on 2002 and failed with 179/73. PREPARATION: i studied from August to December last year. In that time i read Kaplan notes twice, i was thinking to take the exam in December or January, but i had some personal problems. after that i decided that if i were to take it i should prepare in less than three months. i kept reading on and off and really started to study on mid April. SOURCES: Beacause my goal was simply pass and as i said before i could not afford more than three months, i tried to keep it simple. the only book i read cover to cover was first aid, and read from BRS pathology and Physiology, MMRS, Kaplan notes, high yiled cell and molecular biology and inmunology (i was able to answer like 10 questions because of this last two, which i read in the day previous to the exam). For questions i used mostly Q bank. i took NBME 1 three weeks before my exam and got 440. in those days i came acroos the askdoc posts' and realized that i had a KA problem, but i had no time to solve it. so i decided to take NBME 2 and if i get anything above 400 i would take the exam. i ended up getting 440 again. my average Qbank score was 60 %, but i started doing question since the beginning. DAY OF THE EXAM: i got lost trying to get to the center so try to go there before the test day, because that elevated my anxiety levels to the sky. then i was there facing the beast for my second time. my first three blocks, i found them asking very basic stuff, nothing out of this world, but in my fourth block somebody in the room farted and the magic was broken. blocks 4 and 5 were tough, but then 6 and 7 were smooth again. ADVISE: i know i am not in a position to give advised because what i was aiming and expecting is just to pass, but, study every week as if is the last one. Know your basics that's what they ask. Pray

forgot to say i had the same experience as dragonfly and felt my exam was evenly distributed, lightly charged on Pathophysiology, pharmacology , and microbiology. pharm and micro question were very straight forward. i only had two calculations, an odd ratio and a hardy weinberg. i had a few mice questions too.

Hi there. what i would do on a typical day was to review a system in first aid or step up, then listen to goljan on that system. for bioch, micro, and beh. sc. i only read first aid and what i did not understand i reviewed on kaplan lectures notes i.e. bacterial genetics which by the way is very well explained in HY microbiology. finally in the week previous to the exam i read HY cell and mol. and inmunology. i did q bank 50 question random and timed. always thought this was a learning tool. on the exam i had some concepts to be popping up all day long like a person on antibiotics developing diarrhea, fat mal absortion and vitamins deficits. like i said very basic conceots but they twist it. that was my study method, because i do not have a score and i was aiming just to pass be careful, it could be my recipe to failure. let's wait. thank you all. this forum really made a difference in my preparation.
