dunno, but the secretary from Cleveland clinic adviced me to apply for the period january-march 'cause that's the time when the american students dont take the competitive electives and that's the time when you have a shot at them. hope it helps.

ManuNastai, I'm sure you were cautious about finding the right PI. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I’ve seen a few students got burned bc they didn’t spend time on finding a good mentor instead just went directly to big institutions or whomever published the most, this sometimes will not work to your advantage. For one, some PIs just recruit students for lab slaves, run gels, gather data etc, and don’t put your name on the paper nor teach you about the method and the way of thought, so you might end up spending time and effort in a project without really being involved.

Research is not for everyone, you really have to love what you are doing otherwise it sucks a$$, especially if the outcome is not guaranteed to be publishable, all the sweat could end up for nothing. Well not nothing, hopefully you will learn to conduct unbiased research and learned how to think, but it might not be able to strengthen your CV.

My advice is to start with something simple then move your way up. For me, right now im doing stereology with a world leading PI in this area at a neuro lab, the institution is small but its very student friendly. This is the fundament of almost ALL the translational research out there, whenever you need to measure the dynamic changes of tissue or to quantify anything for that matter, you need stereology, and because many people don’t know how to utilize stereology correctly, this will make me a real asset.

If you are a beginner keep your expectations low so you wont get disappointed, your name might not be on the paper, the work might be tedious (believe me I know, I count cells lol), but its very rewarding once you gather enough exp to do your own research and pursue whatever interest you the most.

Obviously, doing an MBA is useless for getting into a residency program sad

If you want to get a more qualified answer id recommend you to ask your question here, http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?...

I wouldn’t say its useless, nowadays with the dropping reimbursement and increasing premium, they need ppl like you to handle the business part, and not talking about hospital organization. Some PD are little conservation, so you might have to explain (defend) yourself as to why your degree is very beneficial to them.

You can do your USCE, electives in Beth Israel Medical Center, NY, NY.
This is what I did. When you are there, you can apply each month for more and more electives. I stayed in the hospital 6 month and got 6 letters of Recommendation. You can also do there research, meanwhile in the elective. Each month cost only 200$.
IMG friendly IM programe. Good Luck!
