32. An 80-year-old woman dies shortly after admission to the hospital because of a 3-day history of progressively increasing shortness of breath. She had a history of heart failure. Examination of the lungs during autopsy shows alveolar damage with distended lymphatics, congested alveolar capillaries, and pink-staining homogenous proteinaceous hyaline material in alveoli. Which of the following is the most likely cause of these findings?
A) Amyloidosis
B) Aspiration pneumonitis
C) Emphysema
D) Pneumonia
E) Pulmonary edema
F) Septic shock

The findings of alveolar damage and hyaline material in the alveoli are suggestive of respiratory distress syndrome . Endotoxic shock is the most common cause of respiratory distress syndrome. So the answer is F.Please correct me if iam wrong.

the common causes of ARDS are shock, sepsis. so the correct ans is F. SUV ur right. thank u for correcting an old post....

yes true. the MC cause of ARDS is Sepsis and the hist. looks like ARDS. but the other signs of sepsis is missing. no fever, no shock ?!!

she is been having the dyspnea for 3 days? ARDS won`t take that long. it is per deefinition "ACUTE ONSET".

with this limited hist. i think the most direct explanation is A. pulm edema due to worsening of CHF she has had.

ans F-septic shock
micro changes-alveolar damage, congested cappilaries and hyaline membrane damage is seen in ARDS.her symp progressive dyspnea is due to ARDS

Pulmonary edema is transudate. we cant have the protein hyaline material in alveoli. it is only a pink frothy transudate. the ans is septic shock and the symptoms due to ARDS as posted suv and Kris
