A 2-day-old newborn is brought to the physician because of a generalized rash for 6 hours. The newborn is active, alert, and feeding well. His temperature is 36.9 C (98.4 F). Examination shows a rash consisting of numerous white and pale yellow papules with a large base of macular erythema over the trunk and extrements.
