(A) 20%
(B) 48%
(C) 60%
(D) 75%
(E) 80%

Answer: WHY?

C

this patient is alive at the end of the first year, so probability of surviving for 2 years= 100%*60%=60%

it is D, b/c he made it the first year so he's among the 80% and he is making it a second year so among the new 60%
so its 60% out of the 80: 60/80= 75%

Kaplan gives D but why division ???????

i may have a simpler way of looking at it.

8 out of the original 10 survived to year 1
6 out of original 10 survived to year 2. ( which means 6 out of the 8 that survived the first year)

patient is one of the 6. so that makes his probability 6 out of 8. ie 6/8 x 100% = 75%.
