Dear forum,

finally I get to but my exams scores here. I am an IMG from Germany who failed Step1 on the first attempt with 73/179. I now took the exam again and got 92/228.

Unfortunatly I did not know about this forum during my first attempt otherwise I would have postponed my exam. I took the exam together with the german 1st state exam and was well prepared for the german exam. Unfortunately I did not know aboout Kaplan Q-bank, Schneider Pathology or any other device to prepare the USMLE and basically did no additional preparation for Step 1 and therefore failed.

I was depressed at first but then of course I had to do the exam again and good so I informed myself and studied with the USMLE material and got my 92/228 score.

Due you guys think that score is enough to get a surgical residency spot in a good (university) program? Does it hurt to have failed the exam once as an IMG? I have lots of hands on clinical practice in the US and Germany and my surgical grades are all excellent.

Thanks for your info

love m.

Congratulations on clearing the exam....you are a good example of how perseverance eventually pays off...

...others would be able to better comment on your chances of getting a surgery spot as I am still to send out my applications for the match...

All the best to you n' good luck

Thank you all for your support!

Books: HY-Series: neuroanatomy, embrio, gross anatomy. Schneider Pathology, A&L Mikrobiology and Immunology Review, Fadem Behavioral Science. I read in Robbins Pathologie Textbook whenever I could, regardless of the Chapter and the topic. It is the best medical book I have ever bought.

Questions: PreTest Anatomy (good), Mirco, Pathophysio (horrible) and clinical vignettes (ok). A&L Review Question (good), A%L Practice Questions (ok) Kaplan Qbank (must). I did all questions and read all comments. Concetrate on Qbank. Questoins in Fadem Behavioral Sience book (very good) and schneider Pathology (very good).

Time dedication: I started studing in december and took the exam in the begining of May, so 5 month. As for almost all IMG you have to consider that you will study for the exam while continuing with all your other activities like medical school, so shedule the exam far away in order to study all the topic. I had to discontinue studing a lot during my preparation, but I guess that is the way it is if you study the exam during medical school in your country. In the end i tried to get 5 weeks in during which I concentrated only for the exam.

good luck please ask if you have any further questions
