Have you started residency on j1 visa if so read on.

You cannot leave usa unless your travle to any country outside usa is validated by ecfmg make sure that the ecfmg officer signs bottom right part of your ds-2019 and validates your foreign travle before you leave usa otherwise you will not be allowed back to USA!!!!!(once validated it is valid for the duration of your visa)

I came to know about this rule a day before i was due to depart from usa thank god i did not travle otherwise i would have practically lost my residency spot.

So be carefull whilst on J1.

Hope it helps
Goos Luck.

hello katzung
thanks for sharing this info

anybody know if there s a rule like this for H 1?

True - but this isn't a new rule. Basically, if you don't have the visa stamped in your passport, don't leave the country.

well, even if you have your visa stamped you need your ds-2019 to be validated by ecfmg so even if you have a multiple entry stamped on your visa if you leave usa without the travle validation from ecfmg you are stuck!!!!!!!.

ds-2019 has got a area on the bottom right hand which says that the person is in good standing with ecfmg which needs to be signed by them-SO DONOT LEAVE THE COUNTRY UNLESS YOU HAVE IT VALIDATED EVEN IF YOU HAVE YOUR VISA STAMPED.

On the other hand if ur visa is not stamped and if ur on j1 status just make sure u get a ate at indian embassy (or whichever country ur leaving to) for visa stamping (same true for H1B),you can leave country whilst on j1 status but to come back u need visa stamp.

Hope this helps.
