Kaplan Qbank USMLE

Hi everyone!

I just started studying for step 1 and I started with pathology and it begins with genetic. So I said let's start with genetics then. It makes me feel awful because I read that stuff and it seems like I don't get anything from it , but confusion. I study from Kaplan lecture notes and the BRS Biochemistry. I am an IMG, graduated 2 years ago and I studied genetics in my second year, which means many years ago. But honestly I didn't study such in detail genetics. Do we really need to know all that stuff about replication, all the enzymes, the chemical formulas?

I feel so discouraged... Not enough that it is so complicated, but it is also in a different language. Is it just me?

I meant I started with Biochemistry, which also starts with lots of genetics. That is why I posted here, instead of the Genetics area.

Hey Delphi , c'mon cheer up its all part of the game. Dont worry sooner or later you will understand it , I dont know abt others but same thing hap with me also. smiling face you are right seems like its in a different language. I think this is what you should do: try to understand each and every word they say. Once you understand it , its not difficult to remember the same. I know that it takes time but then everyone of us needed time to understand the concepts when we started studying for step1. Do lots of Qns when you are done with that particular chapter or topic or the subject ( doing qns helps a lot as you get to know how they ask and how you should study), try to analyse why that particular ans is correct and why the rest of the choices are wrong. after a few chapters or may be after the first read you will get a hang of it and then the second read becomes very easy , takes less time and you will get more qns right. And abt the enzymes and the formulas and those things which seem like going into very much detail , they first seem alien to you but once you start understanding their roles , why and and where they are needed and how they work, it will get quite interesting and you will not be required to memorise them as whatever you do after understanding a concept you will find it difficult to forget it.
So be positive and you have just started to study for step1 , so my advice is dont panic, stay calm and dont go to the next page or the next line unless you get the concept right. Once you start solving qns you will realise that concepts and mechanisms are the keys to get qns right on the exam. So be brave and try to understand what you are reading. If you still dont get them post your queries here in this forum and there are many kind souls who would love to explain it to you.
GL. Happy studying.

Genetics is difficult when you begin to study, but it becomes easily when you doing questions.

Pathology seems to be the easiest, you can understand it, memorize it, but still cannot answer correctly the questions.

Thank you so much doc179! I really try to be patient and read everything carefully, looking in the dictionary for the new words, but sometimes it really feels like I read and my mind refuses to understand or memorise, because there is so much to memorise and so little logical stuff ( isn't it ?). Where from the questions? from the end of each chapter?

i was in similar situation delphi & one of my friend asked me to do pretest genetics.it helped me a lot.

at the beginning it does seem that there is a lot to memorise and infact there is quite a bit for memorisation but the key is understanding the concepts and going thru each subject may be twice or thrice ( there are people in this forum who have revised each subject 4-5 times ) is a must as in the first read you just get familiar with the new words , with the new subjects, their contents and concepts, in the second read you feel yeah...I know this and then you start retaining things, third read you are already confident you know most of it and you are even able to correlate , get things together from every subject. I am telling you my experiences , when I went thru each of the subjects the first time I would forget everything I had read in say physio when I start anatomy, then I would forget everything from anatomy when I start patho but in your third read you will be able to say when yu are doing cystic fibrosis from patho you will recollect what you had studied abt the same in genetics. One has to revise many times ( the number of times is very relative , depends on the individual ) and abt the qns, try to do the qns that are in the kaplan notes at the end of each chapter. then you have Qbank, Q book, pretest and practice exams too , do USMLE format qns from any source but dont forget to analyse them and read the explanations too.
