Endothelial cells of the postcapillary venules increase expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in response to cytokines. The increased expression of ICAM-1 results directly in which of the following neutrophil functions?
A) Activation
B) Adherence
C) Chemotaxis
D) Demargination
E) Transmigration

I think B is the distractor. It's C, right? because it acts in this context as a homing molecule...?? Does anyone have any good info on adhesion molecules? Eg, selectin, integrin, ICAMs. Some URL links?? Anything? Anyone wanna post some basic info on this?

B is the answer

Here is the key (Kaplan note)

- CD4 and CD8 transduce activating signals to T cells

- Integrins on T cells (LFA-1) bind to IgCam on APCs (ICAM-1)--> increase cell-cell adherence

- IgCAM on T cells (CD2) bind to Integrins on APCs(LFA-3)--> increase cell-cell adherence

- CD28 on T cells bind to B7 on APCs--> increase the transcription of cytokine genes

remember
rolling: selectins
adhesion: integrins and ICAMs
transmigration: PECAMs
so the answer is B

also consider the word directly in the Q.

ADHESION ---------> ARREST ----------------> TRANSMIGRATION (all Leukocytes).

IF IT IS ONLY ONE ANSWER I WILL GO FOR ADHESION.

Please read last and last but one paragraph on page 54 Robbins (e- 7).
I find the tabular column in this page very helpful.

Thanks folks!
