it is not if damaged- aneurysm of PCOM produces 3rd nerve palsy. PCA occlusion may produce third nerve palsy

dear friend, posterior communicating aneurysm that is usually 3-10% of all the cases produces compression of third nerve which is carrying it's parasympathetic nerve fibers in the periphery of the nerve ....these parasympathetic fibers relay in ciliary ganglion and then go through short ciliary nerves to constrictor pupillae (the circular muscle) ....the loss of this parasympathetic drive due to compression leads to unopposed sympathetic drive that is coming from the ciliospinal nucleas of Budge located at T1 and T2 level in the lateral horn of gray mater ...... through superior cervical ganglion and then through the ciliary ganglion through long ciliary nerves to the dilator pupilae leading to mydriasis (dilated pupil)
