A 77 year old man had repeated episodes of difficulty speaking, facial numbness, and clumsiness of the left hand. Dopler sonography of his carotid arteries shows no abnormalities. Which of the following drugs is the most appropriate therapy to prevent future episodes: A. Aspirin B. Diflunisal C. Methyl Salicylate D. Olsalazine E. Salicylic acid F. Salsalate G. Sodium salicylate H. Sulfasalazine Please give the answer, explain, and state what the other drugs are used for. Thanks.

the answer must be A.. Diflunisal -it's a diflurophenyl derivative of salicylic acid,it is not metabolized to salicylate and therefore cannot cause salicylate intoxication ..it is 3-4 fold more potent than aspirin as an analgesic and an anti-inflammatory agent but it has no antipyretic properties..it does not enter CNS ,therefore cannot relieve fever.. Sulfasalazine -sulfa drug.others are salicylates..

as long as there is no gastric sensitivity Ill keep it simple with--aspirin Ill take one: sulfasalizine can exhibit synergy, inhibits dihydrofolate reductase when you push PABA. has an adverse effect of photosensitivity. As drpkaur said: the others are fancy ways of saying salicylate. {irreversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase.}

in practice, doctors use Aspirin tablet (81mg, or 100mg but 81 mg is preferable) to prevent TIAs
