I was thinking of all the criteria that one needs to think of while applying to a program. I came up with the following:
1) Number of PGY1 Positions
2) Competitiveness - in terms of minimum scores if published/average scores of people who get interviews there (very difficult to get, but some PCs are generous enough to hint this too)
3) Program history in terms of accepting IMGs (if each year a program accepts about2-3 IMGs at most - and its decently sized, its probably not a very "hopeful" place to apply - unless you are "best of the best" in terms of scores/CV/LORs..etc.
4)Geography (may be important for some, especially those with family ties out here - irrelevant mostly for "single-souls"...thought obviously no one wants to live at a place where u cant go walking 2 blocks without the fear of getting mugged!)
5)Resources _ the amount of $$ u can spare to apply..I dont t=know the average number of places IMGs apply to...but I have met pople who have applied to 15 (and matched!) and 80...
6) The luxury part now: How good is the program?Its reputation..scope for fellowships...benefits/salary...etc....this, though one of the most important of all, I have placed last, since, realistically speaking, we are IMGs..and a lot of things influence our destinies - ranging from the wierd world of visa issues to the fancy requirements of USCE...however, this by no means indicates that imgs cannot aim for the stars...brilliance is not a function of geography and shines out irrespective of petty walls of "requirements"...
and obviously visa requirements....something which may be the primary "screen" for selecting programs to apply to for many of us...
Cant think offhand of any more...but these are my 6 pointers that i have thought up....do post more here if you can come up with ones I might have overlooked!
