Many MD PhDs select research pathway programs where 3 yrs of research is required with 4 yrs of clinical practice (2 yrs of IM+ 2 yrs of fellowship). I was wondering if the programs where flexible and gave credit for post-doctoral work so that applicant would have to spend less time on 3 yrs research rotation. May be BBB knows more about it

just 1 point.. most clinical researcher progs are nih funded.. so it wud be difficult for u2 get a h1b.. and i believe with your phd ur fship is secure in the spec of ur phd.. so its upto if u really want to do 3 more years of research at the cost of clinical exposure - which is most certainly our achilles heel.. good option though if you are really committed to research and want to become a faculty one day.. but if u want to be a plain vanilla attending earnin big bucks in some hosp then maybe a fship after ur residency with 6yrs of solid clinical exposure on h1 is the way to go.. my politically incorrect 2c apurva

I've never heard of a program/track with two years of IM and two years of fellowship.

Research pathways or those fasttrack programs - from what I have seen and heard about work great for US MDs (ok, AMGs!). Most are pretty competitive, and you will finish in 5 yrs (felloship inclusive)...and will obviously save your breath for applying again for fellowship. I am not sure what your credentials are, but with yr PhD and probable publications, you stand a chance among IMGs to get it, if anyone does! Goodluck!

Thanks apurva, I am green card holder so no need of h1b. BBB the guidelines are available at http://www.abim.org/cert/respath_pp.shtm a good presentation could be found here www.pharm.stonybrook.edu/mstp/MSTPtalk-final.ppt Pluses of program- guranteed fellowship, only 4 yrs of clinical work (2 +2), 3 yrs of research on fixed salary Minuses- less of floor exporsure, rushed to make decisions for career planning, trained in a single institute, better suitable for academic oriented doctors then industry (both healthcare and pharmaceutical) I havent made up my mind. On one hand it makes sense to do less work on other speciality during initial phase of int. medicine and focus on speciality that I like. On other hand, I dont wont to commit to do another three year of research. if I find a program that gives me credit for my 2 yrs of post-doc research, may be I shall think.
