dissociation is when the person who has experienced the traumatic event totally dissociates himself/herself from the event and in a way believes that this event did not happen to him and views or gives a narration of the event as if it happened to someone else and not him. the person adopts this defence mechanism to not feel the full impact of the traumatic event. if the person adopts this defence mechanism always then it can result in a psychopathologic disorders and one of the well known ones is multiple personality disorder. eg- a woman who gives a description of being raped as if it was someone else who was raped and she saw it. hope that helped. if i come across a question then i'll post it here. that will help in consolidating the concept.

That was a great explaination achilles!Thankyou! I dug out my step 1 notes and I had written something which might be of help in remembering this....dissociation is depersonalisation. It is the 3rd person experience of 1st person events! I haven't come across a question on this as yet either...but it was in one of the options to a question in UW and the explaination there didn't make much sense to me.

UW gives the following as an eg for dissociation... pt who was rescued frm a burning bulding now denies any memory of the past....this for me looks more like repression or may be suppression if pt denies the event completely. any comments?

dang! scratch my above post. i put tht down without thinking!! depersonalization is a disorder that is characterized by Persistent, Recurrent feelings of detachment from either ones own body or the environment itself. On the other hand, dissociation is a defense mechanism that is used at time of the stressor etc. som, dissociative amnesia also falls into the same category as depersonalization disorder....all under dissociative disorders. Its not a defense mechanism. Pathology per se, is different in each. Other dissociative disorder types are disso fugue and disso identity disorder(translate sybil!)

Dissociation is a defense mechanism in which the patient deletes the memory of the event from consciousness. and then forgets that he deleted it. Patient forgets "what" he forgot. BRS behavioural science.
