Hi im an IMG from Chile south america planning to arrive to the states on july and also enrrolled a kaplan course, but suddenly something popped up in my mind.... i said wait wait why leave my home, family, car, friends, my actual job in a family bussines (earning almost 1000 dolars a day), just to go to an unknown country, new rules, HARD TIMES TO COME, thousand hours to study, thousand of dollars to pay ..... just to become a Doc???? And maybe don't even get a residency spot??? Life isn't just feeling im a supe duper specialist and everyone admires me... so im happy!!! you gotta need money to live out there....

Please i need an advise...a very sincere advise for a miserable IMG that is going through his worse nightmare....TO GO OR NOT TO GO???

everybody has different dreams, if your dream is become a super specialist, teach classes in a US university, live in USA, work with US renowned doctors, etc, etc, you must try it.

But if you don't care about that and you are earning $1000 USD/day=$20,000 USD/month at least only for you. Sincerely, I wouldn't leave my country and my family. I'd stay in Chile (in your case) and work, live and have a nice lifestyle there.

Yes, it's a good chance to go to USA but it's not the only thing, the best one, no, it's not. It depends on the specific situation of each person.

i'm from Mexico. by the way. that's my sincere advice. Of course, it's your decision and you should listen to many other opinions, too. I can also add that for me, for instance, it's not a bad situation at all, because i have good chances to get a good residency spot in my country, so i'm only going to try it the next match 2007 for a position in USA, but if i can't, it's no big deal, i'm going back to mexico to get a good residency program and be a good specialist having a decent life.

very well said chemamr and exactly what i would have said.

and considering the money that you are making, it surely will never be the reason for you to go.

this is a question that only you can answer tuscani - that how badly do you want to become a doc. but becoming a doc is not the only thing in life. if you feel you will be satisfied with what you are doing for the rest of your life and that you will be happy and be able to handle your responsibilities well then continue with what you are already doing. life is all about how we have lived. honesty and helping other and feeling of a rich life lived(not only in terms of money but how much we could help others) and if we feel that we had a meaningful life. i think that is what matters. and you surely can get all this doing something else also.

did anybody tell you that you can not become a doc in the states?

that shouldn't be a reason to do it. This process is long and difficult, but if you really want to do it, you'll get it eventually, you can do it, but the question here is if you really want that, how do you see yourself in 10 years?, where (Chile or USA)?, do you need to be a doc in USA to be happy?. Only you know. Again, Good luck Tuscani !. bye.
