Hi everybody,
Thank you for the prompt response. Well looks like everybody is up for biochem and we could be a team. Let us do it guys!
I am planning to take by Dec 2006. I am a single mom and have a 8hrs a day job.
But I will try my best to keep up. Hope you all in a better situation than I am.
First of all what book are you are using? Let us set up a weekly target, say get back every Sunday. I am going to be reading Kaplan home study kit - hence will be starting off with volume 1 biochem part which is 112 pages. Topics include
1) Acid base equilibrium & buffering 2) protein, enzymes adn coenzymes 3) Bioenergetics 4) Carbohyddrates 5) Lips 6) aminoacid metabolism and 7) summary of metabolism.

Whichever books you are comfortable with I hope you are up for these topics for the next week-10 days. Any suggestions? Keep in touch on progress during the week.
Cheers!

hey all.... i guess...i want in too.... i wasnt doin biochem...was into pyhsio...
but i'll start it from tmrw........
so i was thinking..since most of us r doin kaplan but ther seems to b some disparity as to the chapters... how bout we all decide at the begining the topics/chapters we must finish in a given time... everyone can do their own chapters or topics..but must finish within designated time..so we can all finish the subject at around the same time......just a thought...
ps...i usually prefer goin from begining to end...so im gonna do section 1 ch 1.2.3...that equals about 26 pages....depending on speed and concentration(we all follow a diff piper) its gonna take no more then two days...less preferably....
so tell me if u wanna do it this way...
im using the kaplan notes 2005...

Hi seems,
Are you using Kaplan notes ( is this the one that accompanies the lecture videos ) or is it different. I bought a home study kit from Kaplan which is four volumes classified into general and organ system based categories. The first volume has Biochem, Mol Bio Cell bio and Genetics as four large sections. If we are going by topics how about the topics I suggested earlier.
Welcome Jade! it is agood idea to finish the subject the the same time so we can all pace ourselves. Lets decide and get started.

Hi all.

I am an IMG..started prep one month ago and plan to sit in NOV. I have just finished my physio and behavioral science and plan to start Pathology. I plan to read Biochem in the end as I need to be fresh with it, it was my weakest subject. Actually, I wanted to comment on target's books without u asking for my opinion, but I just want to help. When I started to study, I was not aware of this forum and the resources, so I also bought the home review kit. But whenever I asked on the forum, I was strongly advised against it, it seems to be more difficult to study and grasp when compared to the lecture notes, even I found it so,,its more of cramming reather than understanding the concepts. However if you feel comfortable with it, go along with it if the style suits you.

If there is anyone starting with Patho, please let me know.

Good luck to all.

Target, et al:

I will follow your lead and start with Biochem. I was studying a different topic but I am flexible to change at this point in time. Besides...strength in numbers! I am using Kaplan lecture notes and Lippincott's Illustrated Biochem.
A tip of the cap to you for marshalling us together. I'm a father of four little ones (7F, 6M, 3F, and 1M) with a lovely and supportive wife as part of our team.

Warmest regards,

yeah target ,i m using the kaplan LN wz videos.

ok guys ,i guess we shd start biochem, with the1st 3 chapters ,and shd not take more than 2 days ,so who ever finish it b4 this target of 2 days ,he or she will post here, and this wud encourage the others too. but we shd be done wz all these chapter.if its ur 1st reading ,like mine ,then we shd just read it ,offcourse getting th epoint ,but we cannot REALLY memorize it .this is what i think i dunt abt u guys guy s,but thats whta i have learnet frm this forum, ppl say 1st reading means get familiar wz the stuff ,understand it ,and memorize it wz th esecond revision.
i dunt where do u guys live.our 2days will start at different time and end at different time ,but thats ok i think as long as we finish it in 2 days ,we r good.
ok then if anyone wants to suggest anything ,they can ,but as for now ,the first chapter s,which is abt ,

chp:1 "Nucliec acid Structure and Organization
chp:2 "DNA Replication and Repair
chp:3" Transcription and RNA Processing"

if anyone think that these chpters r less we can add one more to it i guess we shd .
ok so even chpter numbr 4
chp:4 The Genetic Code, Maturation, and Translation
ok guys starting frm 12th of june ,or the 13th of june, mannn .plzz anyone suggest which date?
good luck and see u guys soon

Dark Gable, Thank you for the kind words. Looks like you have a big team to support you in this task and we are here too.

hey guys! Looks like everyone has Kaplan lecture notes except me. Does any one of you have an extra copy as a soft copy. Where do I get those them second hand from students. HELP!

Meanwhile I am going to read from Home study books from Kaplan and since I dont know the topics it would be good to go my topics that seems has suggested.
Today I didnt get anyting done yet - it is 11 p.m. My son (7m) is in bed now and I am motivated that so many of you are with me. I am atleast going to read a few pages before I hit the bed - starting now June 12th. I am on central time USA. Do you guys want to share which country you all are from if not the exact place - that can be a secret till we get to the exam !

hey there
its good that we have come to a final thing.
so target ,u can get th ebooks frm ebay ,at a very cheap price though.ihad two copies but when i came to the states i left it back home ,cz i cudnt get all the books ,u know the weight of our books wink
th eother thing is tht seeing ppl like u ,wz a 7m old son, its very very inspiring for ppl like me ,who has nothing to do ,except a 3 oe sometimes 4 days job(8hrs).
having a baby is a full time job.but a person like u will definitely do it .u r an inspiration to us.
this will be a little tough but INSHA ALLAH soon it ll get over.
i can imagin ur baby he must be soo cute , im sure u wud wanna play wz him all the time smiling face
anyways untilll u dunt get the books ,ill tell u what chpters we r doing ,i ll tell u the topics in those chapters ,and i m sure they hav ecoverd everything in ur books ,i guess just the pattern is different.

so dunt worry go ahead we alll e wz u .read what ever u have , the purpose is to understand these subject ,the book doesnt matter ,as longas it is complete.ok .
i think u got the topics 4 these 2 days.

i go by eastern US timings.

ok then u guys good luck to all.
do report at the end of the 1st day .

Hi seems,

You are right - as long as we understand the concepts that is the key thing.
I did study till about 12.15 a.m last night and started reading in Kaplan but then switched to First aid just to see what was important. Guess what it was helpful!
It helped to know which was important to grasp. I think it is important to use first aid side by side so we are familiar with the book - kind of see related things according to the topic. You are guys inspire me to read daily - I havent had this motivation for years now. I did the structure of nucleic acids - how about you all?

Hi seems is it possible if you have the entire set of notes to ship it to me if you have someone there - I could pay for the shipping. Let me know.

Keep going u all!
