Twenty children are treated in the ER for bloody diarrhea. To study this outbreak, the health department interviews 40 children without bloody diarrhea matched by age and neighborhood. The study shows that 18 of the 20 children with bloody diarrhea went to the local county fair and 10 of the 40 children who did not have bloody diarrhea went to the fair. Which of the following best describes this study design?

A. Case control
B. Case Series
C. Crossover
D. Cross-sectional
E. Historical cohort
F. Prospective cohort
G. Randomized clinical trial

Case control is used to Identify an outcome or effect and a potential cause

This is DEFINETLY case-control. You have two groups, Dz vs. non-Dz and then look retrospectively to access RISK FACTOR(S). In this situation, being at the county fair is the risk factor.

Guys,

I dont disagree with A ... but why not a cross-sectional ?

  #14

Ice Age I think its A because they are comparing it with a Control Group too .. as they do in Case Control study ..
In Cross sectional studies .. presence or absence of a disease and other variable are determined .. at a particular time .. irrespective of the Control or Normal people .. !!

P.s: I too went for Cross sectional in the first place .. wink

I guess it's case-control (and not cross-sect) cuz they gather info on risk factors, which in this case is participating to the county fair. So they get 2 groups: the cases, who have diarrhea, and the controls, who don't.

if they had not used the 40 children, who did not have the bloody diarrhea, as a control then it would have been a case series study.
case series study is a descriptive study of a small group of subjects in which an association between disease and its cause is to be established.
case study involves a single individual.
these studies are especially useful for uncommon diseases.
