I can tell you this, I am a US medical student. Other than the step 1 score your clinical experience is very important. So get that, and get good letters of rec and you wil be fine.

i was in the exact same situ givin my s1 on june 20, 2005. i didnt match.. suggest u focus on completing a complete package for 2008. try for 2007 if u have the cash and want to get the feel of things.. if u need j1/gc then u might make it into a good program. otherwise aim for an h1 in small comm even if u have a 99.. dont mind. my experience.. apurva

What specialty do you want? do you have a visa? (step 3 is only important if you need a visa)... What are your current nbme/kaplan scores (I mean are you going to get in the nineties, or are you planning on taking step 1 with a 500 nbme and 60% qbank score (I hope not)) .... score, score, score, are the most important things. Then worry about USCE, 2007, 2008, or the 2009 match. 10 years of clinical experience wont help you if you get a 76. Study every day, when you are confident you can get above a 90 take step 1. Repeat for step 2. Take 2 weeks for step cs. Then look for USCE and worry about what year to match in.

more than 550 on nbme. I said 500 because that is the level where you can easily pass, but you have a chance of getting in the mid-to high 80's. This is where many people are tired of studying for so long, have other things to do, and end up giving the test. The 95 is only a few months away, and I've seen people throw it all away because they had to get married next month, or go on a cruise... etc...all because they couldn't study for a few more months. Unlike American grads, we can and should take these tests when we want to, and when we are ready. It's the only advantage we really have. above 550 (on both of them not averaged out) means that you should score in the nineties.

phew...above 550!!! I will definitely try to do that ( will try to postpone the exam if I dont get a high score on the NBME ). I was just worried abt wasting a year...hmm.One more Qn if I dont get an observership , I can definitely volunteer in some research laboratory.. I know that observership is far better than a research experience , what I want to know is LOR from a researcher helps or not ? also how much do we have to score in the Q bank ( timed vs untimed ) to get in the 90s in the real exam? Thank you very much. to Katzung : The person in that pic is Dr.Goljan.

If you have the time...aim for nothing short of 99. If you have everything but money and time, you're a friend of mine! Goodluck guys...dont let the passion in your hearts sizzle out!!

you need at least a 68% on qbank timed random questions to get in the nineties. getting above 70% would be best. There is no way to correlate untimed tests or doing questions subjectwise. This is because part of the difficulty of these tests is that you have to keep on jumping from subject to subject, and different people will have different performance when faced with mixed questions. When it comes to time vs untimed, one study showed as much as a 20% improvement in score when questions are done untimed vs timed; so you wont really know how you will perform under pressure. Any LOR is better than no letter. Try for the observership, if you can't get it, go for the research... but I think you already know that. If you have the time... aim for a 99 if you don't have the money or the time then live on a dime but don't take the test until your qbank is at least 69
