anti-ds DNA (and anti Sm) are more specific for lupus. ANA is used for screening (sensitive) purposes.

The most important criteria is positive ANA. Dr. Chemamr is correct ! A negative ANA always certainly rule out Lupus Almosts 100% of ALL patients with Lupus are ANA positive.

Let me explain this to you much more clearly. because there are 11 criteria in making the diagnosis of Lupus, and we only need 4 at "any" time of the progression of the disease. So most rhematologists will do a panel of tests including ANA, dsDNA ,ssDNA etc. A negative ANA will rule out Lupus But a positive ANA will not confirm Lupus So ANA is used to "rule out" Lupus only !
