GME is Graduate Medical Education - education (i.e. residency, etc) after medical school.

Why do some program accept applicants two years before residency starts? They interview in the end of 2006 but the residency starts on July in 2008. Confused...

I guess it is a specialty program. Generally, we need to spend our PGY1 in internal medicine before going into the specialthy program starting from PGY2.

hi people though i am not in run for 2007 match but next year i will be in this boat too. i have read each and every post of this thread and u people have given me so much info which i was not aware of. just two questions for u guys. if some one want to do some minor specialities does a j1 visa give enough years to complete it. second question does beign content with a j1 visa give u gud chances of getting a nice programe in real world. or its all the same for imgs practically. i wud really appreciate if some one can clear my concepts about the merits and demerits of j1 and h1 visa apart from the fact that after j1 u have to return to the coutry of origin and h1 u dont and h1 can be converted into resident alain card while j1 cant. best of luck to all u people for this match.

Can a program know how many programs/specialities applicant have applied and how many interview he or she has received? Let say if you get one or two interview call from big shot programs and you know it is just an interview call and you are not going to match there. Now if you go to the medium size program, is this is plus or not or depends. People here talked about USCE, and how about US research exerience, first author reserach orginal articles and US maters or PhD count for the residency. any suggestions.

muzammil, i guess that whatever differences you have stated between j1 and h1 are the main ones. other thing is that for h1 you have to give step 3 before residency and for j1 you don't. also, i think most places offer j1 but very few offer h1. newto usmle, USCE is best. research exp is good too. i don't think programs know of all your applications and interviews. thats what i was told, somebody please confirm.

ERAS APPLICATION In the application, there is an education section (either undergrad and grad). I have both undergrad and masters apart form medical degree. It seems like I can only fill out education once. Is it ture or is there any option of doing education twice as well.

It is only by OASIS and take one business day. Now they are eliminating paper business altogether. From now on you can only apply for steps via online and no more paper applications. For those who wish to go through paper, they need to request paper form via mail and wait for months in order to apply for USMLE exams.

hi wamba, I have started contacting various program to know their criteria for applying . some of them do say that passing step 3 is prefered by them. additionaly I want to add that it is good idea to contact program by email or phone to know their criteria to avoid unnecessary rejection. response to me so far is very good. you may not get response from many but than you have a chance to give them less priority.
