the personal statement varies from specialty to specialty...some of them insist on good indepth statements, examples are pediatrics, pathology, and psychiatry... a page is sufficient for most of them... again it has to come from you-period!!!

For some basic ideas, I think first aid to residency match is good book.

guys, so personal statement should be around 1 page? another question: When programs say: We do not sponsor visas. (besides the not IMG friendly aspect of this sentence. Does that mean they sponsor J1 but they don't sponsor H1. I ask this because i understand that J1 is sponsored by ECFMG not by the hospital. Am i correct? Please tell me your opinion).

The threads for 2006 match may have some of your answers... I read that the PS should be no longer that a page, that is better if you write it yourself, and should include who are you, what have you done so far, what do you expect from the program, and why do you think you are a good candidate... Some believe that the search fora program should not be according to the IMG friendly status, but look for programs requierment and compare with you actual credentials and cv... U may have what it takes to enter an awsome program... And Chemamr... the best way to clarify your doubt about the visa may be is to contact that particular program and ask directly, email and phone are at freida or the school web site...certainly they will clarify if there is an absolutly NO IMG status. I've been reading about the match since last year and let me tell you...it will be very frustrating, there is even a thread about who was the biggest looser with more number of rejections... I'm with you applying this year and wish you all the best luck in this path...

Hi, I know that eras allows a maximum of 20000 characters including spaces for the personal statement. Though its preferable to write a one page personal statement, it is not the requirement. i agree with isther that its best to research the program requirements and find out which one suits us best rather than look at IMG friendly lists. Does anybody know of programs which have unusual requirements? please do post here. I know of one program, Rush Uni at Illinois that doesn't take any grads outside of US medical schools. Please guys, help us reduce the hospital search work by posting unusual criteria of any hospitals that you know of so that we know where not to put our money while applying.

thanks guys for the answers. Thanks Isther for your support. I'm with you, too.We are a team now. i with that idea to post the hospitals with unusual requirements that automatically unable us to get a spot there.

Duke University requires step 3 to ALL their applicant IMG's... So that's 1 less program to some of us...

apurva, do you think it is good sense to apply to 3 different specialities in the same hospital or will it affect chances

chem gollum - i really cant answer that question as i am myself vexed by it.. try and avoid it as much as possible as u never know.. although if its a big place then its fine.. dont try it at a small comm hosp.. im plannin on not doin it as there are plenty of good progs for every spec.. however only the same select few offer an h1.. catch 22.. and there is this belief that in some hosp all the rols go thru the same gme ppl - althoh i find this hard to believe.. final say - apply to 2 progs in same place but try to avoid iviewin if possible.. although there was a guy last yr who tried for multiple specs includin rad, im, psych, research pathway, prelim, surg, ophthal and still a few more.. he iviewed at the same hosp for multiple specs!! apurva

i have another question, what would be better? an observership in a US hospital or clinical experience in my home country?? if you only had these 2 options for 2 months (for instance) what would you prefer?
