What is the drug of choice for treating migraine?

Is there any other drug beside beta blockers (propranolol)for its prophylaxis?

  #2

for treating an acute migraine, one can use sumatriptan (5HT 1D agonist), NSAIDS, antihistaminics, ergotamine.
For prophylaxis, apart from B blockers, we can use tricyclic antidepressants, valproic acid. Low efficacy ones are NSAIDS, methysergide, verapamil.

Thx MEg!
But how does valproic acid and TCA's help in that?

  #4

What are the side effects of triptan's and methysergide?

  #5

I think TCAs prevent reuptake of 5HT (along with NE) and Valproic works by increasing conc of GABA and also works on Calcium (T) channels.

Triptans have cardiovascular complications mainly hypertension. Also reports of sudden cardiac deaths in CADs.
Methysergide is notorious for retroperitoneal fibrosis.
