Hi, everybody, if I wanna check I am eligible to take the exam or not, do I have to apply an examination first? Can I just send my credential and tranlation to ECFMG, and ask them to verify it first without applying an exam? Because I haven't decided my eligibility period yet. If I apply an exam, I have to tell them my eligibility period, right? I called ECFMG, but they said they will not verify my credential without an exam application. In their information booklet, I do see the following information: If you are submitting medical education credentials to ECFMG separately from an exam application, you must send the credentials to the following address: Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) 3624 Market St., 4th Floor Philadelphia, PA 19104-2685 USA As well, on the form 344/345, I found "if you are not currently applying for an examination, send the forms and document to 3624 Market St., 4th Floor" Anybody has the experience? Plz help. Thanks a lot!

Hi Cherub! One cannot seek verification of credentials until he/ she is officially registered with the ECFMG. This means that you need to have an ECFMG ID number before you proceed and that is provided by them only when you've applied for an exam. Your credential verification can only be done against that unique number. Why are you rushing with the credential verification? That can be done any time between the time that you apply for your 1st exam and the time you finish all the steps. and believe me that's a lot of time.... months.... So begin the process after you apply for an exam and have your ID.

Thanks a lot! xavier. I have registered with ECFMG and got the 8 digit ID number, but I did not apply the exam by going through the ECFMG On-line Authentication. So I don't know if I can have the verification done then by having that number? The reason I am rushing because 2 reasons. 1, the major on my credential is not clinical medicine or medicine. It called "Chinese Medicine". I took almost all the basic and clinical courses which the regular medical school students would take, even though the total hours were about 10% less. In the late fourth year and fifth year, I fulfilled 42 weeks in regular medical clerkship including midicine, surgery, OB/Gyn and paediatrics, and 25 weeks in clinical clerkship of Chinese Medicine. However, I am not confident if I am eligible to pass all the exams and have the ECFMG certificate. I am afraid that It turn out I am not eligible when I keep working hard on it for a couple of months. I hope it will not be that way. 2. My medical school is moving to another county soon. It is gonna be kind of messed up transition period. So I wanna finish the verification process ASAP. Thanks

http://www.ecfmg.org/creds/refgde.html follow this link to the ECFMG bulletin of info and see if your degree is acceptable to the ECFMG. Alternatively, you can write an e- mail to the ECFMG seeking any clarification or help. Good Luck....

Thanks, Xavier, I read this Reference Guide For Medical Education Credentials, and I think I match the requirement here basically. gonna send a letter to ECFMG and ask. This might be the best way to figure out if they would do the verification separately.

Hello, I think that if you first verify that your medical school is eligible, you won't have a problem getting your credentials verified: 3. How can I find out if students/graduates of my medical school are eligible for ECFMG Certification? To be eligible for certification by ECFMG, among other requirements, your medical school must be listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). If you are a medical school student and you want to apply for examination, your medical school must be listed in IMED and your medical school’s "Graduation Years" must be listed as "Current," both at the time you apply for the exam and at the time you take the exam. If you are a medical school graduate, your medical school and graduation year must be listed in IMED to be eligible for examination and for ECFMG Certification. To verify that you meet these requirements, access IMED on this website. Hope this helps Yolanda

Thanks Yolanda! I think my medical school and my Graduation Years is eligible acording to that list! I checked on IMED and ECFMG gave me an ECFMG ID # after I put my information in IWA system. Actually, I am more concerned about the major. I heard somebody has Bachelor of Medicine in preventive medicine or basic medicine was not allowed to take the exam, even though he has the medical degree and his school is on the IMED list. I will ask ECFMG to make sure.

Hi, Cherub, I have a few assumptions for your case. 1. You graduated from an university of traditional Chinese medicine in China. 2. Your specialty is in traditional Chinese medicine. 3. You finished 5 or 6 year program of medical training, 4. Your degree is the bachelor of medicine. If all the assumptions hold true, I believe you are eligible for the exam because several of my friends who came from the similar schools took and passed the examsm and I recently received a letter form the ECFMG addressing that. Please email me if you need further information at zzhao00@yahoo.com. Actually I graduated from one such a school in China with bachelor of medicine degree but in major of Acupuncture. According to ECFMG guideline I should be eligible. However, they refused my application. That is the reason I want to have the info of whose who had trouble in getting approved due to the major in preventive medicine or basic medicine as you mentioned above. Do you have any info of them now? Did and how did they solve the problem? To be honest, the guideline for the eligibility of ECFMG certification, at least the credential is not professional at all. I would like to know how to fight with them and the chance to win the case.
