Which of the following sets of values represents an acid-base disturbance that is almost fully compensated?
Phys085Rf1 Answer Choices Correct AnswerCorrect answer Your AnswerYour answer
A. pH 7.31, base/acid low, acid component [HA] above normal range
B. pH 7.37, base/acid near normal, acid component [HA] above normal range
C. pH 7.40, base/acid exactly normal, acid component [HA] exactly normal
D. pH 7.43, base/acid near normal, acid component [HA] within normal range
E. pH 7.50, base/acid high, acid component [HA] below normal range

B

fully conpensated--> pH should be normal 7.35-7.45--> exclude A and E

Exclude C as it is normal value, similarly exclude D

B: acidosis (increase in acid), fully compensated by increase in base ---> normal pH, base/acid normal because both are increased.

Yes I also chose B. But I don't know the answer.

But what do you mean by C and D aRE NORMAL SO MUCT BE EXCLUDED! B is also a normal value!

  #4

normal value for PH is 7.35-7.40

Nadiabarati did you read what I wrote above?

For answer B, pH is normal but actually THERE IS AN ACID/BASE DISTURBANCE the acid component increases. The base therefore increases because base/acid is near normal. So we have : NORMAL pH, INCREASE IN ACID, INCREASE IN BASE---> THIS IS THE CASE OF FULLY COMPENSATED ACIDOSIS OR ALKALOSIS.

FULLY COMPENSATED ACIDOSIS: firstly, INCEASE IN ACID, then COMPENSATORY INCREASE IN BASE, resulting in NORMAL pH

FULLY COMPENSATED ALKALOSIS: firstly, INCREASE IN BASE, THEN COMPENSATORY INCREASE IN ACID, RESULTING IN NORMAL pH

ANSWER C AND D ARE EXCLUDED BECAUSE ALL pH, ACID, BASE ARE NORMAL

About the pH, 7.4 is ideal and the range in practice is 7.35-7.45. I've not ever heard anyone saying the range is 7.35-7.40. Although different documents have different ranges but no one chooses 7.40 as an upper limit. (possiblly 7.42)

You can see this normal range when click "Lab" button in qbank.

thanks a lot robin

by the way you are right normal PH is 7.35-7.45

Such a terrible mistake I made, didn't I?
