How will I know if the event is idependednt or mutually nonexclusive?
x*y OR x+y-xy

The chance of having diabetes is 10% and the chance of being obese is 30%.
The chance of meeting someone who is obese or had diabetes or both is: ?

First of all, what kind of the question is it??: The chance of meeting someone who is obese OR? had diabetes OR? both is:

If they ask obese than - 30%, OR(mean ONLY) diabetes - 10%.
If they ask BOTH (obese + diabetes), it would be separete question, isn't it??

Second, how will I know that those diseases or conditions are not Independent, but Non-Mutually Exclusive? I did not do any research study.

1) Thanks, my mistake was that I was thinking that possibility for event 1 (Diabetes) is 10%(0.1), for event 2 (Obesity) is 30%(0.3), and only for both I need to calculate X+Y-xy=37%(0.37)
But Diabetes is 10% only we are talking about it separately. When question like that it could be 3 possibility/events and all 3 have the same probability X+Y-xy (37%) when we mix them in pool:
1. X, or – 37%
2. Y, or – 37%
3. BOTH – 37%

2) I got it!

Independent event is always about SAME ONE Ds/Condition in different people/patients.

If you have TWO(2) Ds/Conditions, if they are not mutually exclusive, they are ALWAYS Non-Mutually Exclusive: could be one, could be another OR could be BOTH in SAME ONE patient.

Ds/Condition------Patient(s)
1(same one)-------->1-------------- Independent event: A*B*...
2---------------- 1(same one)------- Non-Mutually Exclusive event: X+Y-XY

This is not about causality or relationship between Conditions.

Independent: same one condition - several repeats(patients).
Non-Mutually Exclusive: several(2) condition - one test (coincident in one patient).

Could be Rheumatoid arthritis, could be Obesity OR could be BOTH.
Could be Tall height, could be Heart Ds OR could be BOTH. Marfan sdr or not, no body cares for the exam for this kind of questions.
