hi, is it better to interview as soon as possible? what happens if i can only interview in january. i know intervies start mid october or november. will that hurt my chances if i can only make january interviews? do most programs choose early who they want adn just go thru formalities in the later months of interviews? thanks

i have low step one and two scores. but did all my clincial rotations in teh united states and have honored all of them. (straight A's in clinicals). have great letters of recomendation from US doctors from teh clincials i was in. i have an opportunity to teach at teh carribean school i went to from sept to end of dec. will teh teaching position look good on applications. or should i stay and do interview early? and will an observership help, even if i did all clinicals in US hospitals? thanks again

I don't think it will look that good to be doing a teaching job and not have all your days available to you. Your best bet would be to do a pseudo "research" during this time; ie find some attendings that like you, ask them if there is a case report that they need help on, (most attendings will be happy to give you a couple)... Case reports are relatively easy and are mostly just computer work (literature search, writing) so it is something that takes less time, looks good when people ask what you are doing, and most of all, you can do from anywhere. There is no best time to interview, but you might not be able to interview at all the programs because the days will conflict with each other or the slots might be full if you try to fit it all in during one month.

It's not a job (in the sense that you don't get paid) You just call up some of the attendings that you have worked with and ask them if they have any interesting cases to be written up. If you are doing the teaching job because you need money, than that is a different story; then you should stick with the teaching job.

As long as you can get the interviews in January it shouldn't be a big deal. I have candidates every year that can't make it to the US except in January. (Or only those two weeks in December, etc) Good luck
