Following the whole Vioxx issue--n increased risk of MI
what is the present role of Cox-2 inhibitors--and what would an answer be for step 2?
are they to be used or not??

I read that celecoxib is in market again...although it still produces cardiovascular side effects it's not as big as rofecoxib (VIOXX)...but searle/pfizer still have to put on the side effects that it CAN produce cardiovascular events...smiling face

not sure ideally what should be the answer on the borads, but ethically and practically there is a huge debate going on regarding the use of vioxx and celebrex. The drugs that have been called off the market for safety purposes should not be asked on the exam and nor should be mentioned in the answer choices.Same case with the controversial theories and diseases where opinions vary are usually not asked.I hope someone has a better answer.Good luck

Celebrex has NEVER been taken off market.

The pharmaceutical company has volunteered

not to advertise for almosts 2 years until lately.

Celebrex has been back on all TV channels.

I believe in April, 2005, FDA has recommended

adding a BLACK BOX to celebrex as warning

for side-effects of MI, stroke and GI bleeding.

Celebrex is not a TRUE COX-2 !!!!!!!

The Board (NBME) did ask Celebrex back in

2001.

They have the right to ask any questions but

don't forget about 15% of all questions are

for research purposes and will be tested for

later on.

You will not know which question will not count

and which are the 15% of the questions used

for testing as future questions.

The dust is settled and Celbrex will stay

because it is not a true 100% COX-2 !

In real world, many, many doctors actually avoid

writing prescription of Celebrex !

So it does not matter if Celebex has NEVER been taken off market.

The sale of Celebrex has cut to almosts nothing

despite it has NEVER been off market.

Most doctors just will not write Cerebrex for "new"

patients'.

Only those who are on Cerebrex and has very good response and monitor closely will be very carefully continue on this medication.

Actually there are soooooooo many drugs taken off

market every month, the Cipro antibiotics have gone through hell and so many of the antibiotics have been taken off market without fanfares!

There are actually 20 new drugs (I call those modified drugs) approved every week in America !

So imagine how many are taken off market every week !

The latest kid on the block is made by Merck:

Anti-HPV antibodies against cervical cancer

It will cover more than 70-80% of four major types of HPV (Group 8 ?, 17? 18? and one more ) Any help !
