A newborn has a heart rate of 130/min, irregular respirations, and active muscle movements with good tone. He coughs and grimaces in response to stimulation; he is pink in color, except for his hands and feet, which are slightly bluish. This neonate's APGAR score is A. 6 B. 7 C. 8 D. 9 E. 10

i am confused bet B & C. Robbins (patholgic basis) gives score 1 for GRIMACE and score of 2 for COUGH. what shud we consider? (do we have to disregard grimace once coughing is present.)

for each normal condition score should be 2 heart rate 2 active muscle movement & tone 2 reflex stimuli 2 iregular respiration 1 colour of body in which hand & feet are bluish 1 so total score 8

docwannbe, the cough is a better response so you give a higher score when it is present. so baby scores 2 for cough.
