raised eyebrow What's the mechanism that induced coma (ej. Barbiturates)...decreases intracranial preassure?

Can someone explain me please?

Induced coma is being used more and more

on many seriously head injury pt in the front

line in Iraq secondary to road-side bombing.

The doctor induces chemical coma on soldiers

who suffered massive head injury to cool off

the metabolism of the brain.

Induced coma not just slow down the

metabolism of the brain, reduce ICP, decrease

intracranial bleeding and slowly heal the brain

function.

OHHHH!!!!...ok...But, how does it reduces ICP????????wink

When I did cardiovascular surgery rotation,

the surgeon cooled down the heart to 4 degree

and basically slow everything down.

A 7 year old boy felled into Lake Michigan in Chicago in the winter and survived despite

totally immersed in cold water at -10 degree.

Surgeons used cold temp to cool the brain down and everythings got frozen in the brain.

The brain no longer function except vital functions. Increased ICP may be due to decreased intracranial fluid removal, increase intracranial fluid. But if you cool everything off, then no brain function !

Also doctors use hot water to inject into the

unterus to totally remove the uterus lining to stop menstrual bleeding.

Temperature is used (both hot and cold) to cure diseases !

It did not reduce ICP but stop the increased ICP to further damage the brain !

So...Induced coma works like lowering the brain activity...and that slowing creates a semi-atrophy?...or something..raised eyebrow

  #7

Chemical coma causes the brain to be frozen !!! NO increased ICP, no activity nothing going on

It freezes the brain to absolutely almosts no brain activity (not necessary no brain function)
