polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technigue that is used to amplify minute quantities of DNA using a thermocycler machine in a way that is similar to the process of replication that ocures in the body but with some differences. It is usually involved in other techniques such as restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and thus called RFLP-PCR that may be used in forensics where minute quantity of samples may be found in the crime scene. the PCR products are then run on a gel to detect the banding pattern followed by other techniques such as southern blotting.

in RFLP-PCR, specific sequence of DNA is amplified. thus, to short DNA fragment called forward and reverse primers are flanking the region to be amplified. in this case the PCR in known as single locus PCR.

In other cases, where the DNA fragment to be amplified is unknown, a single random primer is used and the PCR is called multiplex PCR. an example is random amplified polymorphic DNA PCR (RAPD-PCR) technique.
