I have a very basic question. I don't know well how residency/match system works. For Aneshthesio/neuro they say, we need one year residency in internal medicine/ or family practice? does this mean that only PGY1 residents can apply for these residency programs? I assume this may not be the case. If I apply for these programs without pre-requisite (one year residenc in internal medicine), do I need to apply simultaneously for another internal medicine residency programs? Appreciate your input.....

Some Anesthesia programs have the first year built into their curricula now - first year residents spend 6-8 months in IM, but they are actually in the Anesthesia program.

check out nrmp and eras handbooks (freely downloadable from respective websites) for more info.. as bbb has rightly mentioned - most programs are moving towards integrated 4yrs.. but its the exception rather than the norm.. gl apurva

apurva and bbb, thanks for providing your time in replying. So, if I match a program that are not integrated to 4 years, I must be matched to a prelim IM program....right. here is my confusion. What happen if I match one of those program and I could not match a prelim program...things are not very clear. ...sorry ..for many questions...
