A 23 y.o. woman is scheduled to undergo surgical repair of an aortic malformation. A ganglionic blocking agent is administered before the procedure to decrease her blood pressure. The hypotension is achieved by binding of the drug at which of the following receptors?

a) alpha-1
b) alpha-2
c) beta-1
d) beta-2

thanks guys I did it wrong on the test... I didn't see it.

i didn't know Nicotinics are still clinically used? More 'theoretic drugs' if anything. Especially pre-surgery, with all the side-effects...???

I think the answer is alpha-2...agonizing alpha-2 is also considered as ganglion-block. (cuz a-2 is located on pre-synaptic terminal, hence agonizing makes for decreased NT release...). So drugs like Methyldopa..etc.

Just my guess. I understand why it could be Nicotinic, but can anyone tell me why it's NOT alpha-2?

young_doc, nicotinic is the right RECEPTOR for a ganglionic blocking agent. Check that on the first aid page 298 2005 edition...

i know that ganglionic blockers work at nicotinic receptors of both parasympathetic and sympathetic ganglia. Ill return.
