how to recognize primary, secondary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism? I know the definitions, but I mean by lab and clinical?

  #2

primary -persistent hypercalcemia, elevated levels of PTH, check bone mineral density, check signs of hypercalcemia, check for adenoma of one of the parathyroid glands, most common in postmenopausal women

secondary- elevated PTH but calcemia is normal or low, check for diet limited in vitamin D or Ca, chronic renal failure, malabsorbtion

tertiary-most common after chronic renal diseases that cause hypocalcemia leading to hyperplasia of parathyroid, here serum Ca is elevated.
