Dr. Klatt is the author of 'Robbins and Cotran Atlas of Pathology' - here you can see sample chapter from this book: http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn... You can use it in combination with 'Robbins & Cotran Review of Pathology', by the same author: http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn... Dr. Klatt is also the author of webpath: http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/webpath.ht... New 2nd edition of 'Rapid Review Pathology', by Dr. Goljan is going to be released on 11/15/2006 and it will be almost 300 pages longer than the 1st edition: http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn... Dr. Schneider is the author of 'BRS Pathology': http://www.lww.com/product/?0-7817-6022-4

Doody's Star Rating System: 5 stars (97-100) Exceptional title with nearly flawless execution 4 stars (90-96) Outstanding title, with minor problems in execution 3 stars (69-89) Very good title, but usually with one or more significant flaws 2 stars (47-68) Average title, usually with several flaws (or one major flaw) or significant weakness versus its competition 1 star (<47) Substandard title Robbins and Cotran Review of Pathology Edition: 2nd Authors: Klatt, Edward C., Kumar, Vinay, Reviewer: Ivan Damjanov, MD PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center) Stars: ***** Score: 100 Description This is the second edition of the bestselling book of questions and short answers dealing with pathology for medical students. In essence, it is a companion to the seventh edition of Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease (Elsevier, 2005) the leading medical student textbook of pathology. Purpose The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of pathology through multiple choice questions and thus allow the students to test their own knowledge of pathology. For the second edition, the authors have updated, corrected, and expanded the first edition of this book. Their goals have been achieved and the objectives fully met. Audience The book is aimed at medical students studying pathology in the preclinical part of the curriculum or preparing themselves to take the first part of the USMLE examination. However, it also could be used by residents in pathology studying for their specialty board examination. The authors are leaders in the field of pathology education and have impeccable credentials. Features This book, like the main textbook, deals with general and systemic pathology. The material is presented in 29 chapters and the last (30th) chapter represents a comprehensive final examination covering the entire pathology in 74 questions. The book contains more than 1,000 multiple choice questions pertaining to the most important aspects of pathology as currently taught in a typical U.S. medical school. Most questions are presented in form of clinical vignettes in a narrative style. The student is then expected to correlate the clinical data with the pathologic findings, formulate the diagnosis or find an explanation for various aspects of the disease, explain the pathogenesis of symptoms and pathologic changes, or provide an interpretation of other relevant findings, such as x-rays or laboratory data. There are also numerous color illustrations of macroscopic and microscopic pathologic findings. Questions pertaining to these questions test students' ability to interpret visual information. At the end of each chapter, there are answers that are also linked to the pages in the main textbook. Assessment This is a first-class review book prepared by two experienced educators. It is a collection of test questions and short answers for medical students studying pathology. Although the review is based on the Robbins and Cotran book, it can be used independently as well. The questions have been masterfully formulated and are designed to test students' knowledge as well understanding of pathologic processes. The emphasis is on pathophysiology, clinicopathologic correlations, and diagnosis of diseases. For each question the authors have prepared a brief answer and explanation. Students interested in additional reading can refer to the text pages indicated in one of the Robbins pathology textbooks, such as the 6th and 7th editions of the main Robbins and the 6th and 7th editions of shorter version. This is an excellent book. The first edition was highly praised by students and professors alike, and I believe they will welcome this second improved and expanded edition as well. At the present time, this book is unique and has no competition. Robbins and Cotran Atlas of Pathology Edition: 1st Author: Klatt, Edward C. Reviewer: Maura O'Neil, M.D. (University of Kansas Medical Center) Stars: ***** Score: 98 Description This is an atlas that incorporates gross, microscopic, and radiologic images paired with brief figure descriptions to yield an integrated, concise medical resource. The atlas is organized into chapters that mirror the Diseases of Organ Systems section in the seventh edition of Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, Kumar et al. (Elsevier, 2005). Purpose The objective is to provide an integrative approach to medical education by combining basic science and clinical information into one resource. The atlas is designed to complement other texts in the Robbins series by presenting diseases in a visual format. As medical education continues to use an integrated approach, this atlas is very timely. Audience This atlas is of particular benefit to medical students and beginning pathology residents. However, any student of medicine will find the images and high yield concepts useful. The author is a second year curriculum director of a medical school and is intimately aware of the format in which medical students learn material efficiently. Features The chapters are organized by organ system and cover most of the major diseases. Microscopic, gross, and radiologic images are included for most diseases. For example, the chapter on diseases of the vascular system includes angiograms and the one on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract includes endoscopy pictures. Although concise, the figure descriptions are complete and include high-yield clinical concepts as well as current cytogenetic and molecular genetic abnormalities. Each section also includes normal gross, histologic, and radiologic images for comparison. In general, the gross and radiologic pictures are of high quality. The microscopic pictures convey the important points of each entity, but some of them are not the quality one expects from a pathology atlas. Assessment This atlas provides an integrative approach to medical education that is both aesthetically enjoyable and fun to read. Consistent with the commitment to excellence in medical education, this atlas is a superb addition to the Robbins family of texts.

i think goljan is a good teacher but BRS is a better book. but how come you are comparing them with a text book author. i love Robins but i cant compare it with review books. i agree with tolito that you will cause mutiny with this poll. ;-)

26malik first of all, we are comparing here the authors with all their books (or other activities) as their merits, not the single books with each other. also, in the 'Robbins' family we have textbooks ('Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease', 2004, 1552p. and 'Robbins Basic Pathology', 2002, 873p. ), as well as reviews; both 'Robbins' books by Dr. Klatt ('Robbins & Cotran Atlas of Pathology', 2006, 512p. and 'Robbins & Cotran Review of Pathology', 2004, 432p.) are reviews, not textbooks! So, you can compare these reviews by Dr. Klatt to the reviews by Dr. Goljan and Dr. Schneider easily. I guess you should be more careful when you are reading something. tolito what do you mean under 'you too see mjl1717'?

aha, now I understand - you just have confused my nick-name with that of mjl1717 - I guess that's because of the numbers after the letters in both of them.

sorry p53 i agree with malik. first of all your poll asks who is the "best pathology guy" not who's books are better. remember your biostatistics p53, in order to be "statistically reliable" they should be judged on equal planes. i think its unfair to judge them on this stand point unless schneider and klatt released audio lectures themselves or we all go sit in on one of their lectures at their respective schools. if u want to get specific than in my opinion schneider's review is better than goljan's. though both their questions pale in comparison to klatt's. some say robbins review can be used as a stand alone review but i've found it more useful as a kickass question source. also if you are generalizing why not include in your poll stanley robbins himself, since his legacy is never more than two feet away from where i study everyday.

OK, general malaise, let's discuss it: first of all, Dr. Goljan has NEVER officially released his audio lectures himself - in fact, he was 'hacked' (there is a proper term for this action, but I can't remember it now) - these audio lectures are illegal, so we can't take them in the account; I agree with you, that maybe Dr. Schneider or Dr. Klatt are even better lecturers than Dr. Goljan (for example, Dr. Klatt has got 'Excellence in Teaching' award many times - http://med.fsu.edu/FacultyProfile.aspx?activeDire...), but we don't have any data to judge about this - so, Dr. Goljan's audio lectures are out of consideration. About GREAT Stanley Robbins - 26malik has complained that I'm comparing the author of the textbooks to the authors of the USMLE reviews - as I already have said, that's not right - Dr. Klatt is the author of reviews, not textbooks; now you are suggesting exactly the same thing, 26malik has complained about - to include the author of the big textbook in this poll!

yes i'm aware that goljan audio is bootlegged i only meant that it would be good to listen to schneider and klatt teaching in order to better compare. if we don't count the audio and since i consider klatt's review to be more a practice question book than actual review i will have to cast my vote for schneider

if you are taking Goljan Audio out of consideration, than it means that you are comparing not "the Best Guy" , but the best author. And here , though dr. Klatt is author of many great books, both text and review, you are comparing him with two other guys who are authors of pathology review books. So I still dont think its right comparison . It will be like comparing Guyton with Costanzo.

general malaise who said that you can't review by doing practice questions? I even think that it's the best way of reviewing! anyway, besides his 'Robbins and Cotran REVIEW of Pathology', Dr. Klat now has released 'Robbins and Cotran Atlas of Pathology', which is heavily illustrated concise and brief text review. 26malik as I already said, Dr. Klatt is the main author of only 2 review books, not the textbooks! can you name the textbook by Dr. Klatt? in both 'Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease' and 'Robbins Basic Pathology' textbooks, Dr. Klatt isn't even the co-author! about 'guy' and 'author' - hare I can't disagree, so I'm editing my poll.

Dr Goljan is great teacher indeed, but I like the subject more if I read from Robins and Rapid Review made me hate pathology. But I goback to his lectures then start reading RR again, which makes the book less yucky.

Rapid review Pathology Edition: 2nd Author: Goljan, Edward F. Reviewer: Luka Ozretic, BA (Zagreb University School of Medicine) Stars: ***** Score: 97 Description This is a short review book of general and systemic pathology combined with multiple choice questions and comprehensive answers. It is an update of the first edition published in 2004. Purpose The purpose is to help medical students review pathology systematically and efficiently and thus assist them in their preparation for the USMLE 1 examination. The material is presented concisely and includes only the basic facts and the "must know" details useful for passing the exam. Audience Although primarily written for medical students preparing for the USMLE, the book could be used by allied health students, residents in pathology, or practitioners in need of a fast and efficient review of pathology. The author is one of the leading experts in medical education, an experienced writer of review books, and an unequaled master of comprehensive review courses, which he used to give throughout the U.S. to medical students preparing for the national examinations. He also has a lot of experience with medical examinations and has written numerous high quality examination questions during his career. Many of his questions have been published and used by generations of medical students. Features Of the 25 chapters, 8 cover general pathology and 17 cover systemic pathology. The chapters are followed by a table containing common laboratory values, two tests with questions and answers, and an index. Each chapter is organized into a list of facts covering different pathology sections. The material is presented in appropriate proportions, reflecting the significance of each topic. The presentation is straightforward, making it easy to memorize the facts. Color images, summary tables, schematics, and especially margin notes containing the most important facts facilitate the review of the study material. The tests, each containing 50 questions, encourage readers to start thinking as a doctor and consider other possibilities and differential diagnoses. There is an explanation for every correct answer, but the other options are also discussed, which helps readers to learn the intricacies of pathology. Online access and interactive extras are included and allow readers to study using a computer. Assessment Pathology, as the most important basic preclinical science, is heavily represented on the USMLE 1 and students cognizant of that fact are eager to learn it as thoroughly as possible. For these students, it is often difficult to get the basic facts from the major textbooks and, accordingly, compact review books like this one are a godsend. This book is ideal for focusing students' attention on essential facts, and thus should prove to be very popular. That this is a second edition attests to the fact that medical students liked it and that the book has achieved considerable popularity. I was favorably impressed and would recommend it highly to all students reviewing pathology study material for the comprehensive exams.
