Yes, there are residents having babies during residency all the time. Is it a problem? Working 80 hours week during residency, on your feet all the time, post call, on call, clinic. Not fun, but happens all the time.

This message is to zoya1: Hi there, I am currently doing research and I have a daughter who is 2 years old. I plan to apply for residency to start next year, when she will be 3 years old. Basically from my experience, the baby year through to 3 years is a most precious time for you to form a bond with your baby. I have a friend in a surgery fellowship who took 4 weeks off, had her baby and hardly spent any time with him. The other thing is that nothing prepared me for how exhausted I was after my baby was born - esp the breast-feeding thing! It was like being on call for surgery 7 days a week. I trained in UK and the hours a slightly better than in US although I guess medicine is lighter. Whatever you choose, good luck to you. BD
