The main actions of theophylline are:

- relaxing of bronchial smooth muscle

[col or=#000000]- positive inotropic (increasing heart muscle contractility and efficiency)

- positive chronotropic (increasing heart rate)

- increase of blood pressure

[col or=#000000]- increase of renal blood flow

- some anti-inflammatory effects

Dr Virgo one good tip deserves another: In reference to Beclamethasone =in general steroids make the patient feel better and the doc feel better. But they are not without numerous side effects. eg. weight gain, HTN, osteoporosis, masking diabetes, etc. Also inhaled beclomethasone would produce these numerous side effects to a MUCH LESSER degree. From what I understand the mec of action is at the intranuclear receptor. In general theophylline, (the methlxanthine) causes all the symptoms you gave in the q.and what robin mentioned also.

anticholinergic atropine is sometimes used in asthmatic medication regimens to decrease secretions.

dextomethorphan= anti tussive is relatively benign

non select beta antag. propanolol would probably bronchoconstrict, possibly kill him and get a doc a serious law suit.

yes with beclomethasone and Theophylline much ground was covered, robin even mentioned theophylline being a adenosine inhibitor. Id like to know are there any other adenosine inhibitors that are on the list??
